Checksum

Post by Galaxy_Stranger »

Let's say you've created a .wad and you've got everything setup correctly and you're using custom midi tracks that are scripted for level music and other events.

Then, let's say you create a separate .wad that contains replacement .ogg's with the same file names to replace the midi music. If you're playing with other people and they don't include the extra music wad that contains the .ogg files, will you get a checksum error?

I don't believe that'll be a problem.

The only thing sent from one client to another is movement commands and game changes that effect everyone. (Map changes, DMFLAGS, etc) What music is playing shouldn't matter at all.

I think checksums are only in Skulltag, though possibly ZDaemon. I'm pretty sure the checksum in Skulltag checks the file size, or the map lump size, or something in that nature.

Checksums are when the files don't match up for one reason or another. it's not specific to Skulltag or ZDaemon.

Looks like you found the answer yourself.
If you load an *extra* WAD that *only* has new music, then netplay won't be affected (I used to do this many times with vanilla DOOM).

If you load the same wad but with different music, netplay shouldn't be affected, but I'm not certain.

That's the whole question. If one player is using the extra .wad and the other is not.

Well, as I said above, if you load an extra wad with just music it's OK!

And, you could even use IDMUS in netgames to change the music without messing anything up.

The only thing I can think of that might cause a problem would be a wad with a new level (but only while the level is being played) or DEHACKED or DECORATE.

Or you could just play with people who trust you, and ignore the "Omfg, out of sync" message.

I don't think so, because then you could load up an altered wad with an altered colorpalette (for better vision) and this would be cheating

Where'd cheating come from??! Anyways, it is possible to load an altered pallette to cheat.
