Granted that midis will never sound real... but I'd rather them sound better than worse :D. I'm thinking of splashing out on a dedicated midi sound module to get that extra edge, plus, I always use midis to make up for the insyruements that I can't play... or afford to get musicians to play (like an orchestra), and I can get really good resaults. A lot of computer gamnes these days use dedicated sound modules for their midi sounds, and some of the stuff I've heard would put your argument to shame ;).

But it's all logical... what is going to sound better? A collection of samples that some guy put together or a full product that some company spent a lot of money on? Listen to the original Doom MP2's... that is what they are supposed to sound like. BTW, bobby prince would have used a Roland Sound Canvas or a JP1010 to create those MP2's... I know because roland gear has a didstinctive sound... it sounds really nice :).

:edit: Have a look over hear and listen to these MP3 demos of this sound module (These are roland products BTW... Edirol is a part of roland :D). Thesea re all 100% general midi BTW ;). The metal one is pritty cool.

Lexus. Yeah, MIDI can be great.. unfortuantely most consumer-level MIDI playback devices, aren't. They're too diverse, partly because the General MIDI specs leave so much undefined, so a MIDI created with one thing won't sound the same in another.

Now, if you could create a MIDI file, and tell people to only play it back with, say, Timidty using a specific patch set, then of course it'll sound just like it's supposed to.

Although that kinda makes me wonder... would someone be able to make a wavetable patch set that sounds just like the OPL synth sets Doom uses? That way, you could have OPL emulation at the simple cost of wavetable playback, and be able to play regular MIDIs with it, and it wouldn't put any extra onus on ZDoom (since it wouldn't need any specific code to play OPL music).

MIDI never sound realistic but some sounds pretty good, like my current synth.

If you want hideous midi, try getting a card or something that has Crystal FM Synthesis. That shit is the worst thing to disgrace my ears since Kirby 64 SFX.

I beg to differ. The Kirby 64 OST was pretty good in my opinion.

And let me guess - you don't like the Final Fantasy stuff either?

SFX = sound effects. OST = music. Small difference there. :)

I like the SFX in Kirby64. It just sounds so satisfying to jumpkick and beatsmack someone with the Fighter skill. :D

Nobody commented on my idea to make a GUS wavetable patch set out of the OPL instrument sounds to emulate OPL music. :(

Because I didn't see it - it would be cool, especially if there's a way to convert GUS wavetable sets to SB Audigy compatible soundfonts.

Wow! EMU have just released a software version of their famouse Proteus sound modules!

http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp ... tegory=631

I need to get a new sound card anyway, so I'm going straight out to buy this tomorrow! :D. This shoud hopwfully kill 2 birds:

1) The stupid slowdowns and overloads I'm getting even on a P4 Prescot 3Ghz!

2) The fact that I won't need to spend £400 on a roland sound module :D.

If it doesn't kill the first bird then I'm taking the lil bitch back, selling my PC and buying a mac!
