Well, I'm pretty heavily invested in the BattleTech tabletop game, both time and money. Over a hundred miniatures and a number of sourcebooks, and I've only very recently begun gathering resources for building a terrain set for a wargaming table. Escaping into that game series, learning the game, and teaching it to interested friends and family members (who don't necessarily have to spend a penny, as I let them use my units), has made me feel generally better.
Well, it's a hobby.

My advice is undertake a project or regular activity from which you derive personal satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment. What that activity or project might be depends on what lifestyle you've come from, and what about it has affected your emotions.

To put it more plainly: what are you unhappy about?

Visit Rosstraining.com every day. That oughta inspire you! The man isn't just a super-athlete in his spare time- he's a fight coach for a profession and he always talks about encouraging others to get more exercise, not caring what kind of exercise you use to get the job done, he's just happy that you're joining the minority. Top that off with wisdom and research and he easily makes a great personal hero.

This is more true than you'd think. I sometimes find myself stuck in a loop of cycling between the same three websites, and it's actually quite frustrating and depressing. Find anything else to do. Remove all the shortcuts to your web browser if you have to.

As an American, I can confirm that we have been making greasy sandwiches with fried-chicken buns since 1776. An American tradition all the way.

(Joking, obviously.)

I can give advice regarding drums.

Objectively, even if it sounds good with multiple cymbals, we only have two hands. Therefore, unless we're manipulating the hihat with our foot, playing the hihat and ride simultaneously is unrealistic, such as starting at 0:35. Unless you know this and it's done knowledgably, you just learned something.

Subjectively, I feel more connected to the drums if the hihat is panned to the left because that's where it sits when I (and many others) drum. Unless you're playing with the drumkit reversed.

i am fully aware of the unrealistic drum-manipulation. i just don't care. my logic is that it isn't a bunch of humans playing the instruments, it's a machine. which is true, so i don't really care about how realistic my compositions are.

the panning i can't do anything about. for some reason all hi-hats are automatically panned to the right in MIDI. i can't change that.

I agree. If the composition is synthetic, then it's synthetic. Part of the point of machine music is to break the constraints of human limitations when playing. Or, there could be more than one percussionist, or one percussionist recorded more than once, or using loops... :D
