Funny you should say that, because in a similar vein, I made something a while back that I never got around to advertising here...

Lasting Light: Chex Quest 3

As the name implies, load this on top of Lasting Light to play it in Chex Quest 3. I threw it together a couple of months ago for fun, because I thought the strange dichotomy of the cutesie Chex Quest world against the darkness of Lasting Light was amusing.

I suppose I could do the same for Heretic and Hexen as well, if there's demand. Shouldn't be terribly difficult.
I finally downloaded chex quest 3 just to try it out xP

It was quite a strange experience...

Woah. Sudden revival feedback. Anyways...

@EdtheBat: Lasting Light for Chex Quest 3, huh? How ironic and obviously odd. I'll have to try this out. Heheh.

@FireHusky: Yes, I know. This mod was never intended for multiplayer, and I myself have no intentions of adding support for it. If some other brave soul wants to try it out, go for it, but I won't be doing it.

I hope you guys are still enjoying the game!

I was wondering since this is content wise finished if I could take over this project or if you'd preferred I'll keep to my fork of the mod

Go ahead and just keep it as a fork, but by all means, continue with your progress. The fork will help differentiate who has done what and what the original game was like. Go ahead and start your own thread for it if you're so inclined.

When you're scared and your senses are limited by the darkness around you, your first instinct is to be alert and look around as much as possible... The Screecher denies you that, and that's what makes this mod so brilliant and scary! Seriously, try this mod guys.

Anyway, having played this mod more extensively now I have a bug to report: I was able to get caught by the Stalker and after my lantern fell to the ground I was still able to get to the next level (I was really close to the switch). What happened then is that at the beginning of the next level I automatically died without anything happening...

I think it would be a good idea to just disable player action after the start of the death sequence, not only to prevent this but because if you like to play with brightmaps and lights.pk3 on (which in my opinion adds to the atmosphere of the mod) the small lights in some textures let you understand that you're running around freely after your lantern fell to the ground, and as it stands I think it breaks immersion... If at least there was some other indication that after your lantern fell you are being hopelessly chased, this wouldn't be a problem though.

EDIT: Alternatively you could give players a small chance to escape death after the lantern falls to the ground to make them run frantikly in panic and if they did escape they would be left without a lantern for the rest of the level, after which if they got caught by an enemy again there would be no chance of escape. What do you think?

@iVoid: I interpret this as a glitch, or more of an oversight on my part. It was planned to just be a small "cutscene" death, where you hopelessly run around hearing only your screams and footsteps, only to end in death. With the addition of the bright maps you're playing with, though, it lets you still navigate somewhat. I'll probably just make it so your lantern breaks and all goes black, then you're stuck (literally) until you die. I'll have a fix out soon enough. Thanks for reporting.

To be honest I haven't done much work on my fork I'm working on my monster for this but I have no idea how I'll go about implementing it

The monster in question : The Watcher.

"She's blind but her hearing is pretty damn good though"...

For an idea on how she works check out Two Minutes of Terror : The Watcher on youtube

Make sure you are playing with the latest official version of GZDoom and you have GL Lights turned ON. Also, Force Additive Lighting in the GL Options must be set to OFF. If, for some reason, you ARE playing with GZDoom and you DO have GL lights on, a glitch came about somewhere. If that is the case, are you using an SVN version or an official, stable release?

At first I really hated the Screecher due to not fully understanding his behavior, but this mod has since grown on me. I've even made an effort to put specific exceptions into a map pack I'm working on to allow compatibility with this. One thing that bothers me, though, is the Stalker's tendency to appear directly on top of you or to suddenly clip up onto lifts as you are riding them.
Although, I do really love the sound of extra tools to have at your disposal. It'd give some incentive to fight your way towards the as-of-now empty secret areas in so many maps.

I can't get the mediafire download to work. It keeps reverting to the download page without offering me a legitimate download. I know that's more a mediafire problem than this project's problem, but an alternate link would be appreciated (I'm using Google Chrome, but I've used mediafire plenty in the past). This looks fantastic and I've tried accessing it with other browsers to no avail. Not sure what my issue is.

EDIT: Google is my friend. Searched the wad and found the ModDB page. Download in progress. :)

Yeah, it must be some sort of Mediafire issue on your end, but I can't seem to replicate it. You're not the first one to point out issues with Mediafire to me, though (Although this is the first time with it in regards to Lasting Light). I'm not sure why, but hopefully they get the issue worked out. Nonetheless, I've updated the main link with a mirror through Dropbox. Give that a shot.

That is superbly scary! I do think the lantern could do with a softened flicker, perhaps 3 lights it bounces between with each of them a different set of ranges (near, mid, far). I did end up running with the solid light, and I played with my display settings to make dynamic lights a little subtler and slightly larger (just my tastes).

I tried it with epic2.wad and I must say it seems to suit it perfectly. It truly feels as though I am delving into a haunted Egyptian ruin. The only thing that's a little weird about it is the blacked out courtyards and such. Creepiest thing I've played in Doom... although I must admit I've not played much in the way of creepy things for Doom. :)
