can I use ZDoom with all versions of Doom?

Post by Tylak »

Hi, a friend of mine downloaded ZDoom so we could lan doom at work. I really like playing doom with all the improved rendering and extra features. Problem is that I'm only able to play Doom2 right now. I actually own the Doom collectors edition with D 1 & 2 & Final Doom ect... but I only like playing with ZDoom (plus the collectors edition doesn't like my mouse).

So how do I run my other Doom games using zDoom?

Thanks, sorry if this it totally newbified. I never played much doom before. I went straight from Blood to Half-Life.

I just downloaded ZDoom 1.22 (Win32) and extracted it into my Ultimate Doom directory. When I launched it it ran in a 320x240 window. When I went to display mode I could not run higher than 8 bit and I could not run full screen..... hmmmmrmmmm Am I missing something?

- Don't use v1.22, it's many years old and horribly outdated. I recommending using this extremely recent version instead.

- You can't go higher than 8-bit. Sorry.

- Not sure why you can't go fullscreen, but try out the newer version linked to above and see if the same thing still happens.

Thanks!

The download link on the main page confused me at first. I clicked the source link... became confused.... and promptly scrolled down the page to find something that made sense.

So I have the latest version and its working great. I would say more but I have a lot of killing to do and precious little time.

Thanks!

No problem :).

BTW to answer your initial question, ZDoom works with all the Dooms... as well as Heretic, Hexen and Strife :D. To play them, just extract ZDoom to a directory with the relevant IWAD (the file with the .wad extension, i.e. doom.wad, doom2.wad, heretic.wad, etc) and run it.

You can even have more than one game IWAD in the same directory, in which case ZDoom will present you with a menu asking you which game you want to play.

I've heard that ZDooM can also support Blood to a point, even though it doesn't even use the doom-engine. Hello Build!

I focking love blood. I haven't tried zdoom with it, but I will in a minute. Currently Blood runs like total ass on my home maching and work machine. I used to have the CDs but I lost them a while ago.

Anyway, I just played thru Episode I with ZDoomGL. I like the GL renderer a lot. But then I crashed on the second level of Episode II. I was pressing tab to check the map and it went down :(

I'm gonna try see if I can get Blood running thru ZDoom. That would r0ck!

cannot get blood to run with zdoom.... It has a fatal error when I launch it. Looked around for some updated Blood app. Nothing.... :(

Agent Me is joking. The screenshot of Blood on the news archive is actually a Blood map converted to Hexen.

Actually it does let you load build levels, though you can't actually play them due to missing objects, broken effects like overlapping sectors, etc.

I hope someone makes a port or something. I don't know how.

It's not something someone does one night when they're bored. Making something like that takes a free-time commitment, and lots of work, and luck.

That's where the "hope" part comes in eh? ;)

BUILDLIC.TXT comes with the more recent versions of ZDoom, so it could be indicating something.

(Though, IIRC, Blood's source is currently unreleased.)
