Zdoom does not work in Dos Box.

Post by Chex »

I know that Ctrl Alt F5 gets me into record mode for DOS Box. I want to record something for Zdoom in Dos Box. It's not going to work in Doom because I'm recording a demonstration of modified text strings. So some won't show up in the program WhackEd2.

What I want to know is how do I record in Zdoom if possible? I have already considered using WhackEd2 but some strings from the file language.enu aren't there. I edited that file in Slade.

ZDoom hasn't had a DOS version for... a long, long time, has it?

Not since 1.17, I think.

You'll have to use Fraps or Hypercam or something of that ilk.

Why are you trying to record in DOSBox? There are a great many better ways to do it. FRAPS is probably the best, but it isn't free. If you search around, there are other similar programs out there.

I personally recommend bandicam for recording videos. Alternatively, you can record a demo which can be played back in zDoom

I've had great results with dxtory as a recording utility, though it does cost close to $40 US.

I think Hypercam became free sometime. I can try it since I think my sister has it.

I like recording with DOSBox because it's built in and I use it to record my games uploaded to YouTube.

Understandable but DOSBox is for DOS games/applications and ZDoom isn't a DOS game. So you are going to need some capturing software that runs on the OS that you are running ZDoom under.

Personally I use Fraps (I registered it some time ago) and it has always worked very well for me. There is a trial version that (from memory) restricts the length of videos that you can record with it and puts an on-screen watermark on your video. Fraps does come with other features: screenshots and on-screen FPS readouts, which you may or may not find useful (not really needed for ZDoom because ZDoom can do those things natively).

CamStudio never worked for me, but your mileage may vary. Some of my friends have had success with it.

The newest version (last time I tried it) refuses to work on my screen setup. Older version I kept still works fine.

CamStudio movies' FPS are terrible. It doesn't happen with Fraps for me.

If you're running under Windows Vista / 7 / What'sthatotheronethathastheMetroUi?, then you can actually use a program such as Open Broadcaster Software - it doesn't make uncompressed videos. But with a little tweaking, you can get a decent-helluva good quality to use for recording without getting the performance impact of Fraps.
