Ooooh, the new ATI drivers...

Well Lexus, I don't know the specs of my bro's computer...

I do however know that my computer has 768 megs of DDR RAM and a 2.4 Ghz processor.

Your computer should be able to run Doom3, but just not on High Detail. :P

My point was simply that I don't think upgrading your CPU will help you very much compared to obtaining a better graphics card.
Half-assed guess, anyone? Upgrading the CPU will relieve bottlenecks that are caused by a slower CPU, and upgrading the graphics card will relieve bottlenecks in that department. It's really hard to determine where bottlenecks are occuring, sometimes even when one does know the specs of the system in question. SiSoft SANDRA will, IIRC, tell you what the currently most problematic bottleneck point is, so one might give that a try when deciding what to upgrade in the case that an overhaul is undesirable.

Anyway, for all you know, given the specs provided here, maybe his immediate problem is that he needs faster RAM. Geist just now said that it has "768 megs of DDR RAM" -- not very informative, Geist. Maybe his hard drive rotates at 5600 RPM as well, causing another major I/O bottleneck. Maybe he's loaded down with spyware/adware/virii.
Also, 2.4 GHz? Whether it is AMD or Intel, and what core, will tell us the relevance of that clock frequency.

I suppose it's forgivable, though, since you do admit that you don't know the specs and it's not your computer anyway. :P

It's really interesting that my NVidia card played the game extremely well in High Quality right out of the box...

Yeah, an Nvidia is on my short list of very expensive things to get ATM... problem is that I don't have any money and it'll take me 3 weeks to save up for one... that is assuming that I loose my social life and live in my bedroom more than I do ATM :D.

Anyway, I'm working on upgrading my processor (but my social life is very important to me ATM :D) and the video card is next on the list... then I'll throw in a stick of really fast 1gig mem :D (can you get 800mhz ram?). See, I only realised about a month ago tht ram had speed... nevermind the fact that you had to match ram, processor and every other things speed up or you will potentially get major issues... now I'm more knowledgable I should have a pritty fucking fast computer by my 21st birthday (February... as I want to hold on to the little social life I have... which means regularly spending a pointless amount of money :D). Let me see... by the I'll have a gig of fast ram (Mmm, I'll have to just get another 512 that is the same as my current one... which is DDR 400), a Nvidia 6800 (Hopefully should have gone down in price by then) and a 3.2Ghz P4 processor! Now I'm beginning to wish that I'd have the guts to give up my social life :D.

Yes, I'm getting major bottlenecks... Doom 3 is runnable to a satisfacvtory standard in medeum detail at 640x480 res... but it still bottlenecks... I noticed that when playing another modern game (Legacy of Kasin Defiance... great game BTW) that it bottleknecked when a large amounts of sprites were visable on screen (happens a lot as they use sprites for fancy special effects and dust particles... which there are a lot of :D)... I think this is a graphics card issue... but then, I do have a shitty Cyrix processor... which is a joke really... but that's not important how I wasted my money on a cheaper imitation... Can't trust anyone...

It's really interesting that the game was enginnered to work better on NVidia cards because of corporate politics. Everybody will change their tune about "lol wich card si best" when ATI sells out to the next big graphics intensive game to come out and it works better on an ATI.
