Post by Bitterman »

Need use of some nice, HD skyboxes for you GZDoom project? Look no further, as I have put together a GLDefs ready skybox collection.

There is currently two sets of skyboxes, one set made by Hipshot, which I have released in the past, and and the other set comes from various authors with a set of new skyboxes for you to use.

Here are some in-game screens of Hipshot's skyboxes:
Spoiler: Skybox 1: "Grimm Night"
Spoiler: Skybox 2: "Miramar"
Spoiler: Skybox 3: "Stormy Days"
Spoiler: Skybox 4: "Violent Days"
Spoiler: Skybox 5: "Interstellar"

I like the Skybox 5: "Interstellar" ones.

Can you do something more like a dark space with nebulas
like this one?

I have one with a galaxy theme, other than that I'll see what I can do.
-Edit-
I remembered Tormentor667's Stronghold project had a 512^2 space skybox.

-Edit #2-
Something like this?

Yes, it's Back to Saturn X.

I also added some new screens in the main post.

Wow, those are really really neat!

Are they only compatible with maps specifically made for skyboxes like that?

I assume I can't just use them universally because that would be too easy and awesome...

I believe these skyboxes will only work in a GL render, so GZDoom and maybe Zandronum are the only source ports that work. I don't know what you about the maps, just type in the skybox name in the sky1 = in MAPINFO and you're ready to go.

Ah sorry, I'm far more used to calling them "maps" from years of HL1, but I meant wads.

And its that easy? Neat, thanks!

Hey quick question, I've been looking over the zdoom wiki entry for MAPINFO, but it doesn't say where it is, I can't find it inside any wads...? I only located it in pk3 mods (like brutal doom) which I assume wouldn't control any/all levels. So where is MAPINFO then?

I apologize in advance in the likely event this is a stupid question :P

Links are dead. I am just trying to find a zdoom skybox to reference so I can make my own.

Any chance of a re-up?

Edit: disregard. :D

Sorry for the late reply. The MAPINFO is a special lump supported by ZDoom, which allows to do extra stuff to your map, such as editing the name or changing the sky. Since original IWADS don't have a MAPINFO, you'll have to create your own. I'll suppose you've read up on MAPINFO, and know what to do. If your making a custom map, just open the map in a doom editor (Such as Slade3, which is what I use) and place a new MAPINFO (containing one of the skybox names of course). I believe that's all you need to get it to work, since I've defined the GLDefs myself. I'm not sure if this helped, but I did my best.

Ghostbreed: It's the same as the above conversation. Although if you want just the sky on your map in one file, copy the skybox patches and the GLDefs, and place them in your map file. Credits appreciated as well! :P
