Video: 20 years of DooM modding

Video: 20 years of DooM modding

Post by neoworm »

In short - I want to make a 20-30 minutes long video featuring as much DooM mods as possible.

Long story:
I will have a presentation about DooM modding on a largest czech con soon. Originally I wanted to have list of mods, have few pictures and talk about it. But there are too many mods worth mentioning so I decided that I will make it more of a show and do a video instead. So far I have about 5 minutes of footage and its doesnt look bad at all. In the end I would want to have at least 20 minutes long music video. And if I put that much work into it, it would be waste to show it once and forget about it. So I come here to find out if people would be interested in such thing.

I have few otions:
I can either show the video only on the con
Make it also availible there - for the community
Or upload it to youtube for everybody to see

Would it be ok, to make the video public? Is it even worth making it public? I will make sure that all the featured mods and music will be properly credited inside the video and in accompanying text. I am not too keen to ask every author if I can, some people are not active anymore, others are hard to reach and in the end there is an awful lot of people I would have to ask. What is your opinion in this matter?

Apart from the moral/"is it worth it" dilema I also have problem with multiplayer mods
I hardly play multiplayer at all, but I know there are mods like Ghouls vs Humans, Megaman 8bit deathmatch, Who dun it, All out war, Stronghold etc. It would be shame not to mention these since the mods are both very good and crucial part of DooM modding history. I can try to arrange some games and make the footage myself, but it would probably take me much more time than it would to people who play these mods often. So I would probably use some help in this matter. Something like 2-3 minutes of some juicy footage from multiplayer mods in high enough quality - 720p, preferably uncompressed and definitely no watermarks. Would anybody want to help?

The concept itself is very novel, as well as extremely timely, especially in light of the recently announced Doom tourney at QuakeCon. Maybe this can not only be showed as a proper public Youtube video, but as a QuakeCon montage.

I'd be down with helping to record multiplayer footage. If you need an extra player or someone to help guide you around Zandro servers, I'm yo' mango.

I'd also be interested in seeing the video--if you can get permission from the specific modders, making it public would be the best idea.

I would love to watch something like this, I really like nostalgia trips. I say it'd be worth it.

I'd say go for it if you can get the permission from the specific modders for the video. It's definitely something I would watch if it was made public on a website like youtube. :)

Well, thats more interest than I anticipated. Ok, I will finish what I have in progress now and I will start collecting permissions than.

About the multiplayer, I will have the video split into parts dedicated to some mod types one of which will be multiplayer. I have to get to it first but I will definitely use the help, thanks.

And when you're finished, be sure to send it to the organizers of the Quakecon Doom II tournament.

Are you also gonna show game modes, such as Invasion? Alpha&Delta invasion, Invasion Unleased, Armageddon?
And all the fancy stuff modders can do with ACS or any other workarounds?
Race or rocketjump modes?
Even though its just a video fragment of seconds passing by?

I may be sometimes a show off dude, but im pretty much very proud of my M.A.D.2 system.
Can i submit a 1 minute video having 4x9 standard Doom monsters fighting each other?

Or did i misunderstood the goal of making this 20-30 minutes video project?

I already have some basic timeline of what I want to show in the ideal case.

First part should be dedicated to history of various source ports and their mods - that includes all the old weird stuff like batman doom, twilight warrior or Risen3D with models. Kinda mixed bag, but at least it wont be boring "spot the difference" between the ports.

Second part is mixture of custom maps and gameplay mods with some emhasis on slaughtermaps - Deus Vult, Sunder, Speed of DooM, Alien Vendetta and various community map packs combined with stuff like Psychic, Stranger, Project MSX, Hideus Destructor etc.

Third part is dedicated to complex mods, with both maps and gameplay changes, including weird mods like DooM minesweeper. TUTNT, Winters Fury, Star Wars Chibi Rebellion,

Fourth part will skip to the other games on DooM engine and their mods also featuring Blasphemer and Harmony.

Fifth part should be multiplayer - GvH, MM8bit Deathmatch, All out War, Shotgun Frenzy, Who Dun it, Stronghold, Invasion, some Deathmatch etc.

Ending should be something like "best of" - only few scenes, but something really epic.

Now I just need to get all the footage and put it together.

I think there should be mention of a lot of the wads that have won Cacowards also, like Russian Overkill :P
Also you shouldn't forget Zombie Horde and Ghouls Forest 3, which undeniably have helped keep the multiplayer alive along with MM8DM :)

Some others to maybe put in are Samsara, Brütal Doom (easily the most famous), RGA2 and Doomcenter (personal suggestions).

Can't wait :D take your time though, a good late video is good. While a bad video is always bad
