The WIP Thread

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

Just a quick sketch after being reminded of how tacky and 90s the DRD SVN site looks. This isn't nearly what I wanted to accomplish, but it's a start I suppose. Maybe I'll iterate on this. Or I'll just let it rot. Either or.

Wow, there are ECWolf builds on the SVN site now?

Err, no there aren't.

That's both wishful thinking and a subtle, subtle hint on my part. :P

Can't say I care much for the font being used. That makes it look bland to the nth degree, unfortunately. :(

Do you really consider drop down menus better than side lists? I definitely don't, and svn.drdteam.org looks just fine for what it's made for.

Personally I don't like having to mouse-over several menus to see what's available. Also those dropdowens tend to not work very great with the "open in new tab" function.

Also there's nothing wrong with sidebar menus, especially with all the widescreens in use nowadays.

And heaven forbid a site for a 90s game look even slightly like something from the 90s.

I must admit that I never actually liked the SVN site design all that much -- flashy skins made from ingame textures usually bug me, so I just tend to use the low bandwidth skin option. I certainly wouldn't mind a slightly fancier design, but I don't think drop down menus are the way to go with this site.

I tried to give these things an amusing animation, but I'm not sure it worked. I'm considering animating them so they just collapse into themselves, where the top sinks into the next segment, and then that sinks into the next segment, until they all sink into the base where the ammo gets revealed.

Maybe instead, you should just make the segments shoot upward instead of in random directions, with the top segment flying the highest and the next-to-bottom segment flying the lowest.

I was trying for something web-safe without having to bring in @font-face, which would be slightly overkill for something like this.

I wasn't thinking of the default HTML drop-down menus, but a custom CSS-based solution ala this one, except opening on a click instead of a mouseover.

As far as widescreens go, I tend to greatly, greatly prefer fixed-width layouts for several reasons. For one, they don't stretch entire paragraphs across the entire screen into two lines, so your eyes don't have to go back and forth as far. And in addition, they tend to adapt far better to different resolutions and devices (though this isn't as big a concern with a program development-oriented site, it's still nice to consider). Sure, they leave lots of empty space on widescreen displays, but why are you fullscreening your browser this modern era of having more than one program running at once?

And just because a site is based on something old doesn't mean it has to look like programmer art. :) Not that my sketch was any better visually, but I was more interested in object layout than looks at that stage.

I was trying to find a way to fit all the options for the ZDoom family of ports, Vavoom/Eternity, tools and any related projects like ECWolf into a fixed-width (for ease of reading) 960 Grid while satiating my current fetish for top toolbar menus. It's pretty clear that this attempt isn't particularly successful, though, so I might try another way if I feel bored.
