Skins in wadfiles

Post by Toke »

Why does zdoom reject the map entries in a wadfile that contains skins?

cause some skin authors thought it would be funny to put a bunch of other junk into the skin wad to change stuff like the titlepic and music and stuff

Well thats the best way to handle it, the common zdoom devlopment way of doing everything wrong, somehow randy manages to find the worst solution to every problem.

WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE THAT LIKE TO INCLUDE SKINS IN THEIR MAP PACKS!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Can't you make seperate files? Make one wad to hold the skins and another to hold everything else. Is that really so hard?

its not hard, but in multiplayer its anoying, guess this another zdoom 'improvement' that needs to be removed in zdaemon.

I HATE PPL WHO PUT NEW TEXTURES IN THEIR SKIN FILES, but I just hate it when ZDooM rejects it when they put a skin in their texture pack ;)

Changing this would only encourage people to put weapon sound replacements or other annoying junk in their skin wads. If you want your skins to work with ZDoom, put them in their own wad. It's that simple.

I want some way, maybe an extra lump in the wad, to distinguish a wad from being a skin wad with extra stuff and a level wad with a skin.

We could make a null NOTSKINW lump in a wad to tell ZDooM not to reject it. But then skinmakers would put that lump in their skin wad.

I know this sounds confusing, but I REALLY want to be able to include an extra skin with my levels, or etc. If it means disabling this anti-badskinwads feature, I dont care!

It wouldn't work, because skiiners would just add that extra lump.

Hmm...
Someone could make a program that inspects all of your skin files for this lump and tell you if some stupid skinner is hijacking your textures!

Sadly, I have no knowledge of the WAD's format :(

What is the difference between a Duke3d texture resource with a Duke skin in it and a Duke skin with a bunch of texture replacements?

The answer is of course nothing, and that's why it won't be changed.
