You know, if it wasn't such a pain to work with the hardware renderer that might actually happen.
To be blunt, OpenGL has degenerated into an utter mess over the last few years, it's only plus being cross platform support. If that wasn't there the API would be dead, bad as it is.

Re: (G)ZDoom commit messages you would NOT like to see
-ZDoom now requires the .NET Framework 3.5 or later to run. Linux Port? whats that?
-In order to prevent piracy, ZDoom will now check your IWAD's unique signature against its verification server every 2 minutes. As a consequence, it is impossible to play the game without an active internet connection
-ZDoom config file removed due to people losing their settings accidentally when you do stupid things with the filesystem. All settings will now be stored in the windows registry. Doom on a thumb drive? What do you mean?
-Added 4 new DLC packs which add new powerful weapons to ZDoom's multiplayer. Weapons include the BFG 15,000, the 4-Barrel shotgun, the Sup3r Chaingun and the Chain Fist, among others
-All enemy health and dropped items are now randomised to give a more realistic feel
-Support for PWADs removed. Instead, a neew online submission system for maps has been implemented, and the best ones will be chosen and included in future DLC packages.
-ACS replaced with Java for easier coding
-All HUD elements will now be positioned using HTML and CSS rather than HUDINFO lumps
I can keep going
