Skyrim forces users to install Steam, Mass Effect 3 forces users to install Origin. That's what I was getting on about...

Bloodmaster: A behind-the-scenes look

Hello, the guy behind Bloodmaster here. It's been a long time since I was here last. I figure the following may be somewhat of interest to you, it's an essay I wrote about the original Bloodmaster character/persona. It's a behind-the-scenes look at what was going on with the original Bloodmaster.

I want to clarify that the original account was the only Bloodmaster account made by me (not counting this one). Everyone after is somebody else taking on the persona and not doing a very good job of it. You can tell a sharp difference, the later Bloodmasters had a much more aggressive, mean, and spammy style (very unfunny, clearly the work of morons), whereas the original (my version of the persona) was moreso meant to be an innocent noob that happened to be extremely obnoxious (I will admit, in retrospect, that I didn't do a very good job of hiding that it was just trolling, but at least some were convinced ).

The original intent of the Bloodmaster persona was to be a mockery and parody of the influx of annoying, stupid, noobish users that had been joining the forums at the time of his creation. Specifically, the user that inspired the initial writing style of Bloodmaster was phill447, with his long, rambling paragraphs without pauses or punctuation, riddled with stupidity and spelling errors (I can't seem to find them though, must've been garbage bin'd). He was the user Bloodmaster was specifically based on, but the new, noobish users in general were the inspiration for the idea.

For an avatar, I wanted to make reference to an old and tired meme to appear to have very poor taste in comedy, so I selected OVER 9000 as the meme. I wanted the quality to be downright hideous, so I took a screengrab of a poor quality upload of the meme clip, cropped it and scaled it using several different filters, such as linear and nearest several times to make it look awful. I saved it as a JPEG, and then imported it into an old version of MSPaint and saved it as a gif (that version of paint used a very bad dithering algorithm and converted it to it's own palette, rather than an optimized one). I saved it back and forth several times between the ugly lossy formats until I was satisfied that it was horrendously bad.

Starting out, I decided to throw out a reference to a meme to see how fast people would recognize it. The thread title was "how do i made monsters?" (if I remember correctly), the meme it referenced was "How do I shot web?". The other reason for that thread was to establish the persona as a stubborn, arrogant noob, using outdated tools such as XWE and DeHacked. As users immediately tried to point him to much better alternatives (such as Slade and Decorate), he would be so set in his ways that he refused to move on to more efficient tools. Further cementing this user's arrogance was when the moderator told me to quit being so attached to such outdated tools and to actually listen to others, I (knowingly, but unbeknownst to the persona) told him he was just some random member and had no right calling him out, not noticing the green name meant moderator.

I also played around with failed backpedaling a lot. One example being the age of the user. I picked 14 because it seemed like a good age for this persona as a moron. When called out on my persona's age, I quickly changed the birth date of the account to earlier, to be 30-something, and immediately went "No I'm not!" as a childish retort, both to make a fool of the persona in public for comedic effect, and to reinforce the immaturity of the persona. Another example being that I decided to post something like "Lol guys I spraypainted 'teachers suck' on the wall at school!", intentionally waiting to get the expected backlash from such a stupid thing, to intentionally fail at ninja-editing, again for the purpose of comedic effect.

I made the Bloodmaster personality up as I went. When called out for my failed ninja-edit, the moderator mentioned my IP was located in Los Angeles. Although this was simply the location of the proxy I was using, I decided to adopt it as the persona's actual location (I actually live in Washington state). I figured that this kid could live in some shitty, slummy neighborhood, that he was bullied a lot, and came to the internet for refuge. I figured that I could create some bullshit lie that he was pressured into doing the graffiti, and had troubles with his peers. I quickly decided to adopt this as canon for the character, rather than just as a lie.

At some point, the persona's brother brought him along to his punkish friend's house, and the poor kid kept rambling to them about how he's part of some great community that accepts him (he was meant to be delusional as well). He showed them the forum, and the brother and his punk friends immediately noticed that the users didn't like him much. They decided to fuck with him again like when they made him spray paint on his school (he was paranoid and didn't want to, and made him do it for the sake of making him uncomfortable), and tried to pressure him into bragging about it like he liked what he did to the community, to make him look even worse to the community.

I also thought it would be amusing to steal another user's content and use it in a bad first mod (a bad first mod being another reference to phill447). I thought it would be fun to do a very badly done rip of another user's content via screenshots, so after sifting through a selection of screenshots I had picked, I settled on a modified ROTT alpha statusbar that someone had made. Not having the original to work with (which was the point, to reduce quality), I used MSPaint to lazily edit out the numbers and stuff to have it be usable as a status bar. The map itself was thrown together without any thought, I just came up with it as I went, and got bored and gave it an exit. I was so intentionally reckless with intentional errors (such as the window's ceiling being the same height as the sky to the outdoors that it was connected to), that I even made some unintentional errors (like the door to the next indoor area having the sky texture on it, I barely playtested it).

The feature suggestion for voice chat was a deliberate reference to someone's prediction that a noob would randomly suggest voice chat. Funnily enough, in that same thread with the prediction in it, somebody cited the prediction that the feature suggestion was made to fufill, referencing the feature suggestion made by Bloodmaster.

The moderator banned me temporarily for a week, and I had gotten bored of the routine by then, so I started intentionally lashing out at users again to get myself banned when the temp ban expired.

In closing, Bloodmaster was supposed to be a foolish noob, and not a malicious spammer like current incarnations are (and I want nothing to do with those, they are very poorly done). The main reason I did all of this was to entertain myself, but to entertain you, the ZDoom community as well. It was a fun ride, I'm glad that some of you enjoyed it as an improvised comedy act on this forum. :)

Enlightening, sir, but you do realize this means that you ought to now be banned for ban evasion. Don't care about the context. I'm not really a fan of what you've done, in any case.

[ninja moderator edit] That is, I would be banning you right about now, but some delusional part of my brain thinks that you might actually be worth keeping around, or something. Bah. Whatever. I'm tired. Assuming you don't decide to start being Bloodmaster again, I'm willing to let this slide for tonight. (Who knows how I'll treat this when I realize what I've just done tomorrow morning.)

Oh well, so be it. I just wanted people to know what was going on, thought it might be interesting for people to read about the details.

Don't worry about it, I got tired of that schtick quite a while ago. I do have every intention of actually being useful around here, see my emoticon submission for example. :)

If your story is true, and on your word that you'll never revive Bloodmaster, than I shall be the first to forgive you.

And with that, I have only one question.

Tell me honestly, what did you think of this?

I thought it was very funny. I was laughing when I saw it, wasn't offended at all, unlike my persona.

Anyone, feel free to ask me more questions, just do it over PM please, I don't want to clog the What Did You Last Do thread up with stuff relating to this.

Man, I don't know. I'm not entirely convinced that this guy actually was bloodmaster - he hasn't really given any information that couldn't have just been assembled by searching through that account's old posts. (IP similarity and email checks don't really reveal anything either, but as mentioned, those are actually kind of easy to fake.)

If I could, I'd do that Scooby-Doo mask-pull thing. Of course that'd probably be scarier in that it'd probably turn out to be Old Man Radcliffe the Plumber or something.

[ninja moderator edit the second] Actually you know what, first sign of trouble, your ass is outta here.

Yeah, I understand that there's nothing in there that could actually prove that I was Bloodmaster, but I swear, it was really me.

How about this: to prove it, why not unban the original bloodmaster_x account? Only I know the password, and if it really is me, I'll make a post in here using the original account to confirm it.

Understood. I have absolutely no intention of fucking around like I did last time, and actually want to contribute to the community this time. I respect you and think that you're a good moderator, even if you don't feel nearly the same about me.

i now have well more than enough military strength to begin the final assault in ME3, as such my plan is to get the rest that i do not have yet... i will not be satisfied with merely defeating the reapers, i will crush them.

Did a bunch of house-cleaning on my web stuff today. Decided that having separate webfont folders for each subsite was for scrubs and moved them all to one big font folder, and adjusted everything to suit. Seems to have gone well, so I might do some more cleaning and resorting between assignments.

Also, discovered this and am really digging it

One thing I don't get, is that Sodaholic said something about Bloodmaster_X to be some crazy kid who traced him down to this here website. Unless that was one of the later iterations of the Bloodmaster fellowship then I'm not so sure... :|
