Mac Level Editor?

Post by Wills »

Anyone know good map editing tools for Mac OSX? The only one I can find is Hellmaker but it seems pretty dead. I tried downloading the SLADE SVN and compile it myself but mancubus.net is down.... any suggestions?

Have you tried again today? Mancubus.net is back up again.

Ok so I downloaded all those files, now I have no idea what to do... CodeLite won't let me compile, not that I really know where to start anyway. Obviously programming isn't my strong suit... Any ideas?

SLADE3 will work on osx if you compile it yourself... which is quite a pain to do. It doesn't have a functional map editor yet, though. At the moment your best bet is just to run a windows VM

All you can do so far in SLADE 3 is look at maps in 2D view, panning and zooming to your heart's content. You can also move existing vertices, lines and things; but it's not very useful since you can't save your changes anyway.

Still, it's a nice map viewer.

There's always writing your level by hand in a text editor!

This may not be an ideal solution (it costs $$) but a while back, my friend showed me Parallels Desktop running on his Macbook Pro... it was surprisingly smooth and flawless! He was running a Windows-only Digital Audio Workstation software inside PD, and playback on the DAW was perfect. DAWs are known to be very resource-intensive.

I plan on buying PD soon when I start travelling a lot, so I can continue working on my Doom mods on my Macbook Pro...

Not to bash macs, but paying extra money to use windows programs on an already overpriced computer seems silly.

If you find it silly to pay extra for the privilege of paying extra, then the late Steve Jobs' company is really not for you. :p

Parallels is great. I do all my Doom editing and playing using it, and use OS X for the internet, Photoshop, Reason, and everything else.

Should've gotten an iPod instead?
Bootcamp is "free" (just have to buy Windows) if you don't mind restarting to use those Windows "apps".
