DOOM monsters that piss you off...

Which DOOM monsters piss you off the most?

My top three:

1) Pain Elemental
The most obvious choice.
2) Cacodemon
I find myself sighing whenever I come across a group of them. They're lower-tier monsters, but take forever to kill, especially early on when the best you've got is a shotgun. They're also bulky, so they're big-time cock blockers when it comes to rockets.
3) Shotgun Guy
9 times out of 10, if I'm facing a bunch of zombies, it's a Shotgun Guy that does me in. Somehow they always manage to land a hit on me... if you're walking through a corridor and one is hiding to the size of a tight corner, bang. That's it. I often find myself cursing at the monitor directly toward the Shotgun Guy who kills me... I legitimately get annoyed and I go straight for the one that gunned me down.


What monsters are you all most annoyed by?

Revenants. I hate their seeking missiles.

This topic has been done quite a bit of times though.

Catharsis. Mainly because they fit Quake or some other sci-fi game more than Doom.

Arch-vile. I hate his way setting his flame on me and he can resurrect any enemy (except corpses that have already placed on the map, i.e. a dead marine on E1M1)

I think it's interesting that most of the monsters that people find annoying seem to be Doom2 ones. I wonder if that's because the Doom ones are generally simple, have their own niche and don't do anything particularly odd. The Doom2 monsters had to do something over and above that (otherwise why bother introducing them) so we ended up with seeking missiles, lost souls being spat, rapid fire hitscanners, long distance flame attacks and dead monster resurrection. I'm not saying all those things are bad but their inventiveness makes them more unusual and, it would seem, more annoying to a reasonable number of people.

For me, Doom has no really annoying monsters. Sure, the lost souls can be a little irritating at times but they're not bad and when all is said and done, they are a pretty decent enemy.

However, give a big floating ball the ability to spit lost souls and you have an annoying monster. And, for me personally, I have always found the archvile an intensely annoying thing. I remember thinking how cool it sounded in the hype before the release of Doom2 but I hated it almost on sight and, even now - when I can easily deal with them, I still find them intensely annoying. This is compounded by the fact that almost every fekkin' single map WAD seems to feature an archvile set-piece battle. I find the regularity of these near-compulsory fights such a turn off that they can often ruin the maps for me and, often as not, I reach for the key that I have bound to MDK, whack the archvile and all the fun of the map is now over.

In saying all that, I wouldn't want any of them removed from the Doom2 bestiary. They all have their place and they all bring something to the game.

Yes, yes yes yes yes. Fortunately, their use is generally quite rare these days and, occasionally, they can be used well. However, whoever thought them up in the early days of source ports may have thought the idea was cool (and I suppose it kind of is) but what a horrible legacy they left for us all to battle.

Curiously, I don't have any pet peeves with the DooM/2 bestiary. I'm with Neuralstunner, however, when it comes to using enemies improperly. Even the lowly zombie can be a nuisance in the wrong hands. Having said that, I'd say I'm most wary of the archvile, followed by the Pain Elemental. Because of the ability of these enemies to "generate" additional enemies, I find them to be wild cards, typically requiring them to be dealt with first. [Also, it's sometimes difficult to find cover from the Archvile attack quickly enough in open areas.] And in a map with a finely balanced ammo supply, I find it imperative to finish these enemies off first. Still, I find them more "challenging" than "annoying".

Mainly, chiangunners in long distances, in 'sniper' mod. IMO, they are not good to be used this way.

Also, Archvilles and pain elementals placed with few ammo: They can spawn/resurrect other enemies, so people will need more ammo to deal with it. Also, Archviles battles with no place to hide when they attacks.

I'd go with the Lost Souls, Pain Elemental and all stealth monsters.
