Doom The Way id Did: v1.1 Released!

[Version 1.1a released on 2-24-2012 -- update if you haven't yet!]

For those who haven't heard of it, Doom The Way id Did (or DTWiD for short) is a 3-episode tribute to our beloved DOOM.WAD, designed not as a homage-spree but as an answer to the question "What would it look like if id had decided to create a 10th map for each episode?" The end result is a full set of maps that's meant to look, feel, and play like they came from the hands of Romero, Petersen, and Hall, and we hope that they send a chill of nostalgia down your spine.

Some Official DTWiD Promotional Material:

What are you waiting for? Download it!

Also see the official DTWID site and development thread for more behind-the-scenes info, if you're brave enough to read it all!

Huuuge thanks to Hellbent for starting it, a few key guys (Ellmo, Essel, St. Alfonzo, and Marnetmar) for being there throughout the entire development process, Kracov for the amazing artwork (check out the intermission screens!), and to all our talented mappers for making a smashing (in my somewhat-biased opinion) set of maps. It's a loong list of credits... that's a good thing. :)

Is this a weird new way of saying "5", or am I missing something? :P

In any case, glad to hear it!

I found the secret level in the first episode. I thought at first it was far too easy -- like the original levels -- then the difficulty spiked to a more satisfying level. Mazy, but a blast to play.

Definitely a great homage to the original trilogy of episodes.

Although, I didn't quite feel that it answered the question: "What would it look like if id had decided to create a 10th map for each episode?"

If that were the case, this would be a much smaller mod. Though I suppose all these levels would make good candidates, but only 3 (one from each episode) would truly make the cut as being map M10.

Besides, what about "Thy Flesh Consumed"? I always wanted to see more levels like those. Or even more of the surreal style maps from Lost Episode would be cool as well.

Er... the project goal was not to literally make three maps. The "10th map" idea is a way of explaining that we wanted to create levels that could have hypothetically fit in as part of the original episode.

Fair enough.

It would still be neat to see which three maps truly follow the theme in stride and become part of the original Doom experience.
A contest of sorts.

Care to elaborate on that? I'll give it a whirl later and see how it plays.

I think the most appropriate response here is "<3 E1". I can't think of anything more sophisticated than that.
