What Doom monster would you prefer to be?
Re: What Doom monster would you prefer to be?
Only reason I didn't list the Revenants and the bosses is that there are up to 10 possible poll options (and I had forgot about Revs
). Grr. So here goes... One vote for the revenant so far.

Re: What Doom monster would you prefer to be?
When I first saw this thread (title only) I perceived it as a rather hopeless existential question; I really can't imagine being any of those monsters. Nor would I want to play the monsters in very true replications, even if balanced.
Slightly more original player classes with strong relations to specific monster types might be more interesting. They'd probably need a few morphs in their bag of tricks for map compatibility.
Now... Although it was not the question; which monster is the most interesting in this regard? Hmm... Revenant? Archvile? Whatever it is, there needs to be enough about it that the novelty doesn't wear of at the second map.

Archvile...
It has the most 'smart' look, and are able to resurrect almost all killed monster to be an allied zombie. That's rly cool!

Re: What Doom monster would you prefer to be?
Wouldn't Archvile make you overpowered? Think about it... 7 times healthier than a player (though opposing damage can be scaled up to hurt as bad) and ability to resurrect. You'll be having a legion of reborn soldiers in no time that do the job for you while you're sitting in the back cackling and shepherding them around. Like God. God mode Doom.
Re: What Doom monster would you prefer to be?
Oh, I'm sure the archvile would be too powerful. It's not exactly a level array of monsters we're working with here; if anything it is the opposite. If you're going to think like that, won't the question be reduced to "which monster is closest to the player in power"? (And then comes the realisation that players pick up more and more powerful weaponry throughout the map, and then...)
What can you do? Design 6 or 7 powers/weapons for a monster-player to let it fulfill and perhaps exceed the iconic monster it is modeled on while possibly providing meaningful (challenging and entertaining) gameplay. Perhaps make some special pickups with unique effects too, just to let them play at being these monsters without... Having precisely that many hitpoints and an infinite supply of just one attack or two.

The Archvile player class is what I call a double-edged sword. If I stand close enough to the archvilefire deals explosion damage to me (-200 estimate in health) and my target.

Basically my design concept for a spiritual successor to Captain Mancubus.FDARI wrote:What can you do? Revenants' rockets don't actually explode; they're straight-up projectiles. Also, their pain chance is close to Cacodemons', as the chaingun will easily stunlock them. Hell, you can chainsaw 'em and only rarely will they manage to get a single hit on you.
Anyway, I picked Arachnotron, as it'd perhaps be the easiest to make extra weapons for, plus it's a tank of several varieties and is decently fast. Plus, you'd be able to expand gameplay with upgrade modules, like a hover plate or something. And, of course, it's so big, so you can easily make enemy-only areas without resorting to invisible walls.
Re: What Doom monster would you prefer to be?
Well, defending the Archvile, the high health could be a way to compensate the looong time to the range attack be performed. It's almost 3 seconds. If its enemies will be smart living marines, it will be hard to hit them.
About the resurrecting, it could take a few health. (When I've seem the Archvile thr first time, in The 'o' of Death, I had the impression that it was happening, that all resurrection takes a few health from the monster).
Or could use some kind of mana or whatever as ammo for different actions (ranged attack and resurrecting). It could also have a melee punch/claw that would be the basic attack, so the ranged and reviving would be only possible w ammo.
