Doom Demo .lmp Questions

Post by RV-007 »

Is it me or the demo .lmps need to have the same wad (as well as the required resources) to play properly? I thought that demo .lmps are like movies for the doom engine. I plan to use the demo .lmps as preview videos for my [WIP] wads b/c they are smaller in size than youtube videos and the ([WIP]) wads themselves.

Rule: To play back demos successfully you pretty much have to use the same engine version which was used to record them.

Depending on the changes which had been made to the source code, you may find that two or three consecutive versions will play demos without problems. To be certain though, stick to the rule.

They're not.

The demo lumps are, more or less, a recorded list of player inputs. When Doom plays a demo, it actually starts up a game, but instead of taking input from the keyboard it reads it in from the demo lump. So in order to play back a demo you need the files it was recorded with. That's the reason why the lump file is so small compared to a video file; it's input information vs. video information.

As Kappes Buur says, with ZDoom you generally need the same version of the engine too. What needs to be recorded/read back to play successfully changes pretty frequently, so there's a lack of demo capability between many versions.

Is there a way to record the demo into a video? Fraps is out of the question (I don't like the 30 seconds limit).

That's pretty much the whole point of the 30 second limit. You are not supposed to like it and therefore stump-up the cash for the unlimited full version. :P

Then that's the time some people boot up their favourite torrent client and do a bit of googling around - I'm not endorsing piracy, this is just the path that some people take.

If you don't mind the mouse cursor in the middle of your video MSI Afterburner works.

I'll just put off any video/demo questions. I got my answers and that's about it. At least I don't have to record any trailers.
