Indeed. If you'll excuse a bit of metaphor: A bank teller is never shown counterfeit notes to study what makes a counterfeit. They are given the real notes so they can instantly recognize the real thing, and by extension, the wrong thing.

Very much this. It also lends to a large amount of confusion when individual posts (there were a few during the Ceeb timeline that fell to this) vanish from the middle of threads. The big exception is spambot posts, but for everything else, there really should be some sort of record that something was actually there (so we don't get threads like "Why was x banned?" that only result from the lack of remaining evidence).

I do understand that it's primarily the moderators who need to have access to such a "timeline", though I find it a disservice to other users to hide it from them as well. Removing items from the timeline causes unnecessary confusion.

Well, the main problem with Ceeb's posts is that most of them were in off-topic, which is automatically pruned after a certain date.

I specifically recall a situation where one of his posts vanished in a non-offtopic thread, leading to confusion and derailment. IIRC, his ban-worthy posts were nuked as well, leading to the subsequent discussion of why exactly he was banned (although said discussion could've happened after said posts would've been pruned, assuming they were in Off-Topic).

I don't think bad posts should be kept because they can be offensave and just waste space on the forum. :|

Lots of people have been posting "MLYP" WAY before Ceeb. I got it once before Ceeb even registered. :|

I have no issue with crap threads being deleted. All this "it's an example of how NOT to act" stuff is crap when you realise that showing people how TO act is better. As for the timeline argument... only useful for a brief amount of time, and only for the moderators. I don't care why somebody was banned, I won't miss them because they're gone and the odds are the reasoning was sound.
