I'm back... again :D

Post by Lexus Alyus »

I just can't stay away from this place :D. Doom always will have a special place in my heart though.

I've been sorting my life out recently and working to improve my motivation. I installed Zdoom on a laptop I was given (it's purpose is to allow my partner to browse the net so I can use my own compute, which is currently the only computer in the house with net access) and I really enjoyed it. It made me remember all my ideas of Doom mods and stuff, so here I am again :D.

I'm not going to set anything down in concrete right now, I just want to create a few levels and get back into Doom modding. My main goal is to get used to modern 3D editing, so I can someday get a job at id or Valve :D (that's only partially serious BTW :D). Zdoom and GZdoom are really easy ways for me to get what's in my head into a playable game. I know how to do everything myself with those and the only limit is my motivation. I've missed that sort of power and I can't begin to have the same power over more contemporary games (I can't program or make models... yet... at least the model part as I do plan to learn how to make models at some point... I don't think I have a hope with programming though :D).

So:

* What did I miss?
* What features does Zdoom and GZDoom have now?
* What good singleplayer mods/levels are there now (especially since that post I made a while back)?

You may be interested in Legacy of Suffering -- it seems like it'd be up your alley. :P

At any rate, welcome back! Good to see you haven't quit for good this time... addictive, isn't it? :P

If I did completely quite Doom modding I'd hope that I'd start to be active on some other game in the future (Like Half Like 2 or Doom 3). But I've decided not to quit Doom for good... it's too much of a classic and with the power that ZDoom and GZDoom imbues on modders it's just not something I can leave behind :).

I'll be sure to check out that mod. Sounds interesting :).

Nothing important.

Well... ok. Some stuff happened. Most recently, Graf has basically stopped active development on GZDoom but is continuing contributions to ZDoom, and others are stepping in to maintain GZDoom compatibility (port new ZDoom features over to GZDoom, but the rendering engine probably won't be seeing any work).

Everything.

Or really, a whole hell of a lot. The change log is pretty extensive, but you might get a better summary in the new posts for the releases. Can check out the [wiki=Main Page]Wiki[/wiki] too since the documentation is reasonably well maintained as far as the newer features go.

Might be good to remind (or inform, for those who are new) people of when you left so they know where to build the list.

The short answer is, "a bunch". Unfortunately though I've been present on the forum the whole time I haven't been active in playing as of late and have a lot queued up as well. Going to be relying on other people's recollections mostly. Though the ones I remember that immediately come to mind are ZPack (mostly because I contributed maps), Enjay's Burghead thing (think this is the idGames link?), and LWM's Chibi Rebellion (forum thread).

And Action Doom 2 if you missed it.

Relevantly for you, ZDoom can now be built on Macs, or can be gotten from the usual SVN build getting place

Welcome back, Lexus!

You might want to check out Paranoid, from ReX et al.

I'll be downloading Paranoid then :).

@Enjay: Yeah, it kinda feels good to be back into editing. Lets see what I can create with the updated ports :D.

@TheDarkArchon: I have no interest in playing in OS X as I've got everything working fine in XP under Bootcamp. I've also got a PC laptop, so that's all taken care of :).
