What did you call monsters before you knew their real names?

Much alike. The Barons when I first saw them struck me as a cross between a pig and bull. And always thought the Cyber looked like a sort of anthromorphic bull like creature (Was a tough guy to see in SNES graphics), The roar even remotely sounded akin.

Was interestingly different to fight despite the low graphics. Was much deadlier for sure due to splash damage always being maxed out.

I was 9 when Doom first came out and I probably read the manual pretty early on, but still we had plenty of nick names even after reading the manual. I already knew most of Doom 2s monster names even before it came out.

Zombie man: Pistol Man
Shotgun Guy: Only ever remember calling him the sergeant or possibly Shotgun man.
Chaingun Guy: Commando, maybe chain gunner too.
Imp: Only remember calling em imps.
Demon: Hahahahah! The innocence of youth... we used to call 'em Pink Horny things!
Spectre: Only ever remember calling em spectres.
Lost Soul: Flaming skull
Caco Demon: Raspberry heads.
Baron of Hell: Hmmm Baron of Hell is all I remember.
Hell Knight: Same.
Arachnotron: Baby Spider Mastermind, not sure.
Revenant: Skelewag
Pain Elemental: Pain Elemental.
Mancubus: Goodyear's - named after my brothers old maths teacher at school
Arch Vile: Arch Villes (annoying things!)
Spider Mastermind: Spider Mastermind.

Since I have the doom manuals for each of the games. I've never not known their official names. I did call the demons the "Pink things", and the cacodemon and pain-elemental the "red" and "brown" beholders.

The rest I cant remember. Whenever the imps or zombiemen gibbed we'd call that "turning them into meat" or just "meat" lol

The ending screen of Doom 2 did remind me their real names. All because of cheating.

Zombies = don't remember. I think I might've thought they were Wolfenstein Nazis at some point. Probably "Satanic Soldiers" or something, though for some reason they also remind me of WWII Japanese soldiers... no idea why, but I keep imagining some of them wearing one of these over their green crew cuts.

Shotgun guys = Cultists. At first I just saw the uniformly bloodstained black clothes and bald heads and thought they were a satanic cult.

Imps = I don't think I had a name for them, but the spines made me think of some kind of leather goth/fetish thing going on. With that in mind, possibly "Leathers".

Demons = Bulls. (also "pigdogs" above = win.)

Spectres = What The Fock. (I don't think it was until I got the Doom Survivor's Guide that I even realized what I was being attacked by... running Doom on a 386 with that 320x200 screeen and the view reduced to minimum size to attain a playable framerate kinda does that.**)

Cacodemons = Demons.

Lost Souls = Heavy Metal Dudes. Dude, seriously, animated giant flaming horned skulls attacking you in the first level of a video game when you're 12 and all you've ever played before was SimEarth, Duke Nukem and Mario Brothers? Yeah.

Arachnotrons = Spiderbots. The first time I saw them I instantly thought of the spiderbots from Runaway, albeit much larger.

Cyberdemon = Satan. This was back when we knew crap about history and the only time any of us ever heard the word "Lord" was in reference to Our Lord And Saviour Jesus Christ*... so when I heard my friend's description that this was their "lord" that was the instant association we both made.

Everything else, I saw the names in a book before I saw it ingame.


* Incidentally, when we studied Japan in grade five half the class thought a ronin was an atheist samurai.
** My old conviction that the F word was actually "fock" is, however, inexcusable in hindsight.

I only remember calling the Demons "Pink Demons" and in spanish the Baron's of Hell "Cabros" (Goats) and the Hellknights "Cabritos" (Little goats).
Just because of some spanish doomer called "Cabro".
