I like to have it set so 1 is fists only, Q is chainsaw, and E is (regular) shotgun.
But it seems that the latest version of Zdoom has put weapon bind control into the WAD editor's hands instead of the player's, so it's impossible to set it up this way.

Re: Weapon Bindings on player's side
You can still bind Q as "use chainsaw" and E as "use shotgun" -- that will work for stock weapons at least.
But the fact is, mod authors need some method to define the weapon slots that's reliable, though it seems like it's going to be hard to allow both the user and the modder to control this at the same time.

You can put weapon slot assignments into the INI manually. Those will override a WADs definitions.

Thanks Xaser, I didn't know you could put "use" there to make it work.
Okay, guess I have no room to complain anymore. Great work on everything, zdoom people.
