As did I a few months ago. Initially I thought that I may have been mistaken. However, as the game went on I realised that my initial appraisal of the game (ie, it's pretty boring and, aside from the engine, nothing special) was correct.Morpheus wrote:I've exactly done the same.

Re: Question about DooM 4...
Nope. I will still mod Doom 1 and 2.
Re: Question about DooM 4...
I don't think any game release will take this community's attention away for very long.
Re: Question about DooM 4...
Moving on from Doom 2 to Doom 4 could only happen if the latter is planned as a total upgrade, using the same themes upgraded to something state of the art. Not to forget a map editor similarly easy to use as DB.
Doom 3 didn't really fail; it just wasn't designed to be like Doom 2; that was apparent from previews. Editing plenty for Doom 2 despite of Doom 3 is a logical thought, considering those games are so different. We'll see how Doom 4 plans to become.

Someone please edit that poll and remove that "No" vote, it was accidental... :P
Re: Question about DooM 4...
I kinda like it up there. It makes me laugh to know that the only non-yes vote up there was actually just an accident. Take that.

Re: Question about DooM 4...
For me it depends on how the game will turn out. If it's very close to the original, but with better graphics, I will probably attempt to make levels for it, which would mean I'll spend less time making levels for classic Doom. However making good-looking levels in Doom 4 will likely be more time-consuming than making good-looking levels for classic Doom, which might cause me to drop the idea of Doom 4 editing.
StarCraft 2 however looks like a prime candidate for "casual" level-editing.

Re: Question about DooM 4...
I don't think anyone will stop modding the first Dooms. While so simple to modify (compared to the new OMGWTFBBQIGOTALLTHATFANCYMODELSANDSHADERSANDALLTHATCRAP games), it offers many features to use since the source code was given out. Its graphics may not be up to date with the new games, but it sure as hell is in terms of gameplay.

Re: Question about DooM 4...
I'll continue to make my shitty zombies and weapons when Doom 4 comes out so don't worry.
Re: Question about DooM 4...
As long as mediocrity continues to be the core of the sequels, Classic Doom will live on.
Re: Question about DooM 4...
Even if Doom 4 is absolutely fantastic, it will not replace Doom modding. Why? Because they are totally different games from almost every standpoint applicable to modding. If it was just about using the latest technology, then Doom modding would have been left behind years ago. It isn't, so Doom modding carries on.Vesalia wrote:As long as mediocrity continues to be the core of the sequels, Classic Doom will live on.
Re: Question about DooM 4...
If ID came up with a truly amazing remake of the original Dooms (and by that I mean porting improved versions of every texture, sound, demon, music and map from the original Dooms to a new, fully-modifiable engine) I can guarantee you Classic Doom would be left behind, but of course, that's so not happening
Re: Question about DooM 4...
Not by me. That's not because I am some kind of die-hard or luddite, it's just that I like the simplicity of editing with lines and sectors and other Doom mapping conventions.
Re: Question about DooM 4...
From a non-mapper perspective, I can tell you I still value the spritey retro look of the classic Doom with all it's limitations and imperfections, but really, nothing lasts forever. For what I have gathered from the dying Classic Doom community, the game has already entered the "Extended Support" lifecycle stage...
