Question about DooM 4...

Post by Sonnyboy »

A question that's been haunting me for a while.

I know I will, and I know I probably will never own DooM 4.

Didn't this same exact question get asked back in the Doom 3 days?

in all reality Doom 4 would never pull me away from Doom1/2 mapping. It's soooo much easier, but I have been getting the hang of D3Radiant, so provided it comes with a decent editor I'll give it a try or two. But for most purposes I'll use zdoom still.

Never. Doom is easy to modify (Yet annoying to work with. But hey. We all still love it. :P) and you can do a fair amount of things on it. Granted, it doesn't have Polymer or something, but it's still a good little gem. :)

Doom 3 never stopped anyone from from modding Doom and Doom 2. Why should Doom 4?

Most probably yes. Not because Doom 4 is automatically worse than Doom 2, but because we're grown and used with Doom 2 and more appropriately myself Doom 1.

Though if I get better hardware I may become more likely to run Doom 3 or 4 on a continous basis. The fact that it was only recommended to be played at night was a disadvantage. During the day you can see far less ingame, due to sunlight.

From what I've read and heard about Doom 4, it sounds like it's going to be quite a generic game, there's going to be armed civilians, grenades to toss etc.

I misunderstood the question and accidently voted "no" when I really wanted to vote "yes"...

If I ever were to pick "no" on a question like this, it would be because of me dying or some other terrible accident that is not likely having to do anything with the game mentioned. :P

Doom/2 is an addiction that even the most modern of the modern can't cure.

For years, every now and again, people have asked me: "why don't you mod for Duke3D/quake/quake2/Half-Life/Unreal/UT/MoHAA/Doom3 (etc etc)". Aside from the fact that I have actually had a play around with modding all of those games, basically, it just doesn't hold any real interest for me. I like modding Doom and I'm simply just not interested in modding for anything else to any great extent.

That and, perhaps as my last post indicates, I'm pretty far from excited or enthused about the prospect of Doom4.

I'm certainly not a "Doom only" fan. I play a wide variety of games, and while I would definitely agree most post-2000 games suck ass, there are some gems out there.

That being said, Doom 3 was never one of them, for me. It was a cool game, though confusing as hell, and I never really got into it like I did original Doom.

Half-Life? Loved the game. Hated modding for it. My interest in that game died solely because of that. Quake 2 was the same way.

Right now, the two games besides Doom that hold much interest for me are BloodRayne 2 and Neverwinter Nights (not 2). And I'm still here, so what does that say?

I really don't think Doom 4 is going to hold enough sway over me to quit Doom.

I'm reinstalling Doom 3 due to this thread. I don't think it's a bad game at all. It's only the default implementation that's monochrome and simplistic.

I had a blast playing Doom 3 and RoE... The games are pretty over-hated.

As for the question at hand, while I'm sure I'll play (and like) Doom 4, no, I'll still play and mod the originals. In fact, even with the magic that is GZDoom, I still play Doom on my PS2.
