I believe that English is quite a tricky language to learn, with so many irregular words and influences from many, many different countries and then most words having a few synonyms, the differences and subtleties of which may not be easy to decipher for a person not familiar with the language.

However, my knowledge of other languages is so limited that I can't say how typical that is. Do other languages have such intricacies, and to the same extent, or not? I've been told that, in some languages for example, the idea of having a thesaurus is pointless because so few words have an alternative. I'm sure other languages must be at least as complex as English though.

I do remember my Dad talking about an Asian friend of his trying to learn English at his work. The lesson went something like this:

Lesson: Johnny wants to go out.
Ahmed: Johnny wants to go out.
Lesson: Johnny is going out.
Ahmed: Johnny is going out.
Lesson: Johnny went out.
Ahmed: Wait, hold it, hold it. When the bloody hell did "go" become "went"?

Anyway, back to the Russian.
