Re: New level: Remake of Doom E2M4
Heh, once I get that far I might need a beta tester.
Enjay was kind enough to agree to take a look at the map and offer improvement suggestions, which he did by the bucket load. So I've been polishing and primping the map's rough spots until it (hopefully) gleams with perfection. He also showed me how to do some stuff that I didn't know how to do...like palleted textures...I had everything in the harshly limited Doom pallet. That required redoing a whole bunch of my textures. =>_>=
Anyway, hopefully soon it will be time for monster placement.
I'm torn for monster placement...part of me wants to keep the monster and weapons placement true to the original with only minor modifications...and part of me wants to completely redo all monster and weapons, using community created monsters and weapons and the whole 9 yards. What do all of you think? Keep monsters largely the same, or totally change them all up?

Re: New level: Remake of Doom E2M4 12/5 UPDATE
This says it all:

EDIT: As for the monster placement, I personally would keep it fairly true to the original. But go ahead and up the monster population/change things around if you want to, it's a remake after all. Add a few new monsters if you must, but not too many. Will you be using Doom2 monsters and their derivatives?
I'm very eager to play this map. It will blow many a mind.

Re: New level: Remake of Doom E2M4 12/5 UPDATE
I would have to saw one thing......
"Jaw dropping"
lol anyhow as for weapons, keep them the same as the original but for monsters this is where you could vear off slightly. As Jimmy said keep it rather true to the original. Like when you encounter a baron of hell, dont stick a darkness cloud there as there is no resemblance but a hells fury or maybe an afrit or something. Just use replacements that look primarly like the originals but kinda divi it up so as to still suprise people so that your not just encountering imps which arent too difficult. Maybe include a boss somewhere as well?
Anyhow great work and your in full control of what to do but for monster wise, thats my suggestion and its all up to you

And many a CPU too. Do not expect to play it on a low-spec machine.jimmy91 wrote:I'm very eager to play this map. It will blow many a mind.

And yes, it is stunning.
No emoticon, but I think this covers what jimmy was looking for:
Spoiler: Gruesome
As for monsters, I too am not sure. One side of me says keep it faithful, the other says update and I really can't decide what is going to be best.
(@real_trisk, I take it that you got my second set of comments?)

@Enjay: I think Kaiser's avatar back in the days, when he wasn't banned, fits my emotion of this. The one you showed didn't look shocked.

So where IS this level? No upload?

Re: New level: Remake of Doom E2M4 12/5 UPDATE
There has been a bit of progress on the map. I've had a chance to playtest a couple of versions (I think) since the previous posts in this thread. Unfortunately, I haven't seen anything of real_trisk for a little over a month. At the time, he was wrestling with what to do about monster placement as putting monsters in some areas of the map was causing significant slowdown.

Re: New level: Remake of Doom E2M4 12/5 UPDATE
OK all! My levels are finally out! Head over to my website and download the levels now! http://www.prodigal-game.com/doomwads.html
I want to post them to the doom wadstation, but I've had no luck figuring it out, or finding a detailed list of steps for internet illiterate types like me...If somebody knows of a good tutorial for how you post to any of the main wad collection sites, I'd sure appreciate it.
Let me know what you think! You can check out another level I'm currently working on while you are there, as I've got a couple early screenshots goin' down. This new level set takes what I've learned from e2m4 Redux and takes it to the nth degree in a collection of all new levels, not remakes.
