This is a weird one...
I was playing through Heretic E1M3 at about the point where you collect the yellow key. I fired some shots out the window at a Knight. When his blood hit the water, instead of the usual splashing sounds, it made some type of an echoing static sound that went on for about 3 seconds and then stopped. The weird part was that after that happened other different sounds started to play randomly. Sounds like the Heretic player picking up a new weapon (there were none in the area) and the sound of him switching to the gauntlets were among them. These sounds seemed to originate from the spot in the water where the blood splashed into it. I tried jumping through the window to get closer to the source of the sound, and once I reached it, ZDoom crashed. I tried reproducing this in a demo but was unable to get it to happen again.

... and not surprisingly the crash happens inside FMod. Worse, it happens in FMod's internal thread. I'm sorry, there is nothing we can do here. It looks like an FMod bug so all that can be done is hope that the unofficial builds upgrade their FMod version. They still use 4.14, although ZDoom is currently built at 4.18.

Does Duke3D, by any chance, use any sound code that is similar to FMOD? I have had a bug similar to this on Duke3D, except it didn't crash, and I reproduced it several times (however, once I closed the game, the bug went away forever). It was weird though, because once the game ran out of sounds to play, it went on to play multiharmonic static.

Perfectly understandable if it's not even your code. I played for several hours last night after the crash and it didn't happen again, so it doesn't seem like this is common enough to be overly worried about.Graf Zahl wrote:I'm sorry, there is nothing we can do here.
I got the build from the DRD Team server linked from the wiki. If they're out of date... yeah, somebody should probably tell them.It looks like an FMod bug so all that can be done is hope that the unofficial builds upgrade their FMod version. The funniest thing about this was that for a minute there I wasn't sure what to think was going on. Although several sounds were playing, the ones I heard most clearly were player sounds. For a moment I seriously thought some other player (human or a bot) had just suddenly appeared in my single-player game unbidden. This was a strangely horrifying thought....

It was me who put up most of those builds with that version of Fmod. I'd been holding off updating because I thought Graf had also held off. It seems I held off more than him though.
Graf drew it to my attention earlier and I have downloaded FmodEX 4.18.10 (the latest is 4.20 but Graf said that there are problems with it). I'll install the newer Fmod and compile a new version later on when I get home from work.

Please don't bother with GZDoom's r211. It contains a very ugly lighting bug.

No problem.Graf Zahl wrote:Please don't bother with GZDoom's r211. It contains a very ugly lighting bug.
[edit] I just noticed that you are up to r213 - should I build? [/edit]
[edit2] I've just noticed a problem compiling r213 so I've reported it in your own bugs forum.[/edit]
In a few moments, a recompiled r1283 should be up. For info, I took the old build down, but left the map file in case anyone provides a crash report with that version. I have renamed the map file zdoom-r1283-old.map.gz
To make it obvious that the build is newer, I have named the file slightly differently to normal. The file is called zdoom-r1283-fmod-418.zip and the map file for it is similarly named.
Hopefully it's all fine. The install of fmod went OK, the compile did too and I've played maps 01 and 02 and tested a save with the compiled exe (as I usually do).
