DecX - Devlopment Progress?

Post by Tormentor667 »

Out of curiosity - as I found this tool always very useful - what happened to DecX? Is this project still in progress? Any news about it? (as some of the latest functions aren't supported by the decorate editor and I really find this sad somehow, the tool is amazing)

Niya wrote:Anyway, currently Im in the process of rewriting the entire code base from scratch(which I affectionately call the Reference engine). The Reference Engine is what resolves the necessary sprites and actors neccessary for a particular actor to work and is the component from which DecX derives its capabilites. When this rewrite is finished, it is my hope that this new version will far exceed its predecessor. Also I will take into account your suggestions.

I may not be able to respond for quite some time again so until then....
This is what he last says. He doesn't have internet connection at home, so responses can be delayed for some time. I believe he's still working on it by rewriting the whole code base form scratch.

Hopefully a new version has some sort of .cfg load in that will allow for users to update the contents of what can be loaded / written in a future version. Containing that information internally will result in this same tool being re-written from now til doomscript every time a few feature gets implemented.

-- Major Bump --

Hello every one. How are all of you doing :)
Its been quite a long time since i visited this site. Its nice to see that this community is still as active as the day i discovered it.

Ive been looking up on the comments posted on these forums as it concerns DecX to see how the community has responded to it over the time ive been absent. Im grateful that they are mostly positive. I apologise to all of you for not responding any sooner to question and posts regarding it.

Torm recently emailed me about the progress of DecX and i'll give the answer i gave him to all the members here as well.

View the answer here :
Spoiler:
I no longer tinker in doom editing so needless to say im extremely rusty, not to mention that there may be countless new Zdoom features that ill have no clue about. However seeing as DecX has become somewhat popular in the editing community, i feel somewhat compelled to begin working on it again actively. As I said in the email response, what i have so are a few functions that deals with DECORATE parsing, the backbone of DecX's functionality but not much more than that.

When I can really invest more time towards its development, i may certainly need your help to keep abreast of Zdoom's lastest DECORATE related features as well as some suggestions as to what you guys would like to see in any future versions of DecX.

Apart from all that how is everyong. How is HotWax, Cutmanmike, Eriance, Randy, Graf Zahl ?
Are they still around ?.....What are the hot WADs now ? and hot new editing tools.

I hope you all continue to produce quality stuff for this classic engine.
See you all around. :o

All present and accounted for.

When was the last time you were here? I can't remember what big wads came out when, but last year was pretty good as far as I remember. Honestly can't recall what's come out this year...

I couldnt give you an exact date, but it was some time after Eriance release Demon Ecipse. One of the hot projects at that time was a remake of Doom's 1st episode with Zdoom enhancements i believe it was called Knee deep in Zdoom.
My last appearance was around that time.

Ah, welcome back! 'Tis always good to see an old acquaintance return from the void.

Sue me for plugging my own project, but [url=http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=21681]Psychic[/i] has some of the craziest decorate code this side of the planet, in case you need to stress-test DecX further.

DoomBuilder 2 is out and it's much better than the first. Runs great on modern hardware and software.

Ya i was just reading up on it. From what was said and shown it seems to completely blow away the original version. I have some major cleaning up to do on my HD and a reformat before i can even think about installing any new applications though. :| So i cant test it out just yet, but it looks awesome.
