Re: Dawn of Reality - realy big city map
Thats unfair. I try to make another version of this map, without that big textures and, maybe, with some other modifications.

Re: Dawn of Reality - realy big city map
heh, there is a simple and good answer for that ya'know:9skulls wrote:Doom and "reality" just doesn't match =/
Doom is way too old to be played in hi-res textures and real life-like sets. No matter what you do, the game looks ugly and using high resolution textures makes the flaws of the engine look even more obvious. Oldschool low res textures are the way to go.
I know what you're trying to achieve here but it just doesn't work with Doom. Your project is cool but you're just doing it for the wrong game.
Then just dont play it

Well 9skulls it will be you that's missing out
Seriously this is looking great, sorry to hear your having problems with framerates but this always seems to happen with giant rooms, the larger and more complex the giant room is the more lag there is unfortunately. 150mb for one map does sound quite extreme though, I hope the filesize is justified by the map. I never thought I'd see a Doom mod that's larger than Aeons of Death
Keep up the good work

Re: Dawn of Reality - realy big city map
Now I have very important question. Becouse I want this game playable not only on my machine, I must destroy the idea of "one-big-city-map" and devide this on two maps hub. What do you guys think? Then, map will be very smaller, but most playable. I think on delete one very big streets with wagoons, and remove this location to another map. For more info about my fps problem, see this: http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=19306
Re: Dawn of Reality - realy big city map
Sounds like a sensible idea. I know that doing this will destroy part of your reason for doing it but, you know, splitting it into a number of maps might actually make it feel like a bigger project.

Doubly agreed. I was looking into that little side-discussion as well and that seems like the popular choice.Enjay wrote:Sounds like a sensible idea. Also, to those who are already swimming in glee at the 150mb size? Bigger does not mean better. Larger file size does not mean better. Quite simply: Do it, and do it right. Some of my favorites are small downloads.

Hubs will also allow you to pull off illusionistic tricks that make your city seem bigger than it really is.

Then it'll be just like half life 2, which isn't a bad thing.

That's a matter of opinion.

Re: Dawn of Reality - realy big city map
I think you need to work on setting it up like something like STALKER or HL2 did where the city is broken down into large but managable chunks with guiding geometry to keep it from being awkward looking to the player (like STALKER's various barricades that lead to another level when you cross over). Doom in general, even with the GZDoom enhancements, is not geared towards creating a massive, seemless city. Moreover, trying to do it like that without compromise is, I think, going to undermine the playability and accessibility of your map. One of the problems you have to confront is that you're not exactly working with the most efficient engine in the world, especially for massive, huge maps like this.Reinchard2 wrote:Now I have very important question. Break it down into logical chunks. You seem to have a decent amount of mapping skill, based on the screen shots I've seen, so I'm sure you can find a way to do it without it looking crappy.

Re: Dawn of Reality - realy big city map
After last modifications (deleted big open area sector and add few one-sided buildings) everything working fine (to me, i'm not sure this is play witout lags on slower machines). Then, when I finaly work with hub system, I decide to add one more level - inside the school you see in screenshots. This makes game more longer, I think this is good idea. Long time ago I play some school map, but I don't like it. In my version I wan't make good atmospheric location, maybe with horror-like places. I like to see any sugestions.

Re: Dawn of Reality - realy big city map
Please make sure the rooms of said school actually have furniture and things in them to make them look like a school and not some random maze of doors. Every school wad I've seen thus far has suffered from a lack of decoration. I'm sure you could give it just the right touch...Reinchard2 wrote:After last modifications (deleted big open area sector and add few one-sided buildings) everything working fine (to me, i'm not sure this is play witout lags on slower machines). Busy enough to look used as a school - not so crowded that it would get in the way of a fight.
Looking across my classroom right now, with all those desks and stools, running across this room chased by a pinky would be very annoying. Perhaps I should tell my kids to tuck their stools in when they leave just in case of a demon invasion.
