Yes, apparently the infamous Columbine High School shooters were also avid Doom fans.
I played one of the levels one of them had made once. It sucked. Hard.

I made a doom level of my school when I was in high school...

I think it's normal for beginning mappers to try to map stuff they are familiar with. It's not like I was planning on killing my classmates. I think whether or not they mapped their school is kind of a void argument...

edit - wow, this went off-topic quick :|

yeah to be honest i do actully think doom was a big part on the reason they did what they did, back then there wasnt many games like doom, so doom was really realistic to them

Heh...I already knew about it. It is one of the great purposes for playing violent videogames. :D

They gave Doom a bad reputation. :x

apparently Eric David harris was a huge fan of doom, in fact he was obsessed, he'd right stories about uac bases, make levels for doom, draw pictures, read the doom novels... he didnt even live for doom the movie or doom III [which is a good thinh :P]

I heard that as well. Apparently they also made it so that they enemies couldn't attack back and looked like people from the school (Perhaps they knew of DEHACKED?).

Quite frankly though, it sickens me time and again when people try to blame video games when people freak out and go on a murderous rampage. After all, if Doom supposedly "trained murderers," we'd all be out on the streets, guns ablaze. Yet we're not, now are we?

That they did.

There are plenty of other games that came out since the Columbine incident that would have served a MUCH better basis for a slaughter simulator.

I don't think DOOM should be majorally blamed for their (those high school students) stupidity. What about other violent videogames? What about television? There is violence in them. What about violent fictional books? What about videotapes? All can affect the person's mentality for causing the shootings.

yeah, but that kind of pop-culture hot-issue "bad" publicity probably sold thousands of copies of doom. Having the news people repeat the name of your product over and over is great for name recognition, even if some horrible event is connected with it. I think the columbine incident did a lot for marilyn manson's popularity as well.

holy shit you guys post a lot.

True, but some people went over the line by saying let's ban violent videogames.
