truncated~1 directory~1

Post by adx »

can't access some directories coz of their long names, ofcourse when i use the tilde, it toggles the console back. how would i resolve this other than replacing the console toglle key?

You won't resolve it in the way you expect to, BECAUSE THEN HOW WOULD YOU PUT AWAY THE CONSOLE?

When would you be using the console to enter a directory name anyway? How about renaming your directories? If they're directories specifically related to storing Doom stuff, I'm willing to bet that you can change them without it being detrimental to how you have your system set up.

Don't bet on it. Some of the main folders in Windows XP have long names with spaces etc. On a well secured computer you are forced to put your stuff in them!

Can't you just put the directory in quotes? IE:
dir "C:\My Documents"

Rebind the console key?

Or you could just get a UK keyboard setup. The~ is on the same button as # which is beside the return key. The console key has these 3 characters on it `¬¦ :P

umm yeah, quotes should do it.

LWM has the answer you're looking for. Instead of trying to type this:

C:\progra~1\mygame~1\doom\blah.wad

try this:

"C:\program files\my games\doom\blah.wad"

Or even better: a German keyboard where the console key is a dead char which always causes havoc if the console is lowered :(

The title in dos would actually be "trunca~1 direct~1" since dos can only have 8 letters for a dir/file name but anyway...

Like everyone else said, You have either the option of putting the entire path in quotes [which is the easiest way] (changemus "C:\My Documents\music.mid"), or you can either unbind the key then rebind it (unbind `;changemus C:\MyDocu~1\music.mid;bind ` toggleconsole), or you can take the long way and switch away to another program [like Notepad], type a ~ into it, copy it, and paste it into ZDoom's console (changemus C:\MyDocu -- Alt+Tab, Shift+`, Ctrl+C, Alt+Tab, Ctrl+V -- 1\music.mid).

This really sounds like it should be fixed, to me.. the console really processes text, not raw keystrokes, so it should differentiate between backtick and tilde.

shift + backtick = tilde in the console(that's the way it should be)
