Post by Dutch Devil »

Did anybody noticed the similarity between these two monsters both floating monsters with fire it made me think did the designers got inspired by some of the decorate monsters made by the community.

Yes, the similarity is obvious!
I think there was already a discussion somewhere on Doomworld about it...
It would be really cool if the design of the HellHunter was indeed inspired by the Afrit :D

Yah, I'd seen this before the RoE expansion was even released. It's the first thing that went through my mind when I first fought it too... "Dude, that is so much like the Afrit it isn't even funny."

Does anybody know when the Afrit was created? If the Afrit was created before Doom 3, which I think so, the Doom 3 creators could've been inspired by the Afrit.

It wouldn't be the first time inspiration has come from fans. Valve is more open to it than ID, though. I don't think ID's taken a whole lot of things from mods, have they?

Bloody hell, I just played a bit of RoE the other day and thought of the same thing... :P

So after a bit of research (~5secs), it seems that this news post was dated in 2004. D3 itself came out somewhere in 2005 (I think?) and RoE wasn't until after that. Therefore, it could very well be possible. A picture of the Afrit was on the front page along with that post but it's long gone by now. Still, makes you think... ;)

Doom 3 was released in the US in the beginning August of 2004, slightly before that news post. It was RoE which came out in 2005; April, specifically. Since the MRW was probably started not too long prior to the cited news post, it still is possible, since it would have been prior to RoE (but around the same time that Doom 3 would be hitting a gold state.) I'm unsure of when planning and production started on RoE, but my guess would be it was probably early enough to make it a strong possibility that it's just a coincidence. I guess the only way to really know for sure would be to ask, but that strikes me as unlikely to work.

Nanami made the Afrit it was the first thing I thought when playing RoE, heh that monster looks almost the same as the Afrit. It would be cool if they used the Afrit as inspiration but I don't know when Nanami made the monster.

Maybe someone should just try that!
I would be really interested if it's just a coincidence.

Jalla: Nanami isn't Cyb.

Either way, it's not exactly a terribly hard idea to crack, taking the Arch demon from Ni'mrod and then remove it's legs, add some sparks to give it a floaty magic effect.

And since the Helltime hellhunter is supposed to be fast, not having legs would help making it look convincing, rather than having it pedal around on those hoofs like the roadrunner.
