Zdoom supports any gamepad or joystick Windows does.

I used to have a gamepad that I set up nicely that once in a great while I'd play with for kicks. Then it busted.. *shakes his fist at frustrating Freespace 2 missions*

how do you config zdoom for specific newer gamepads? (such as my new logitech dual action)

Having used a Dual Action a few times in ZDoom, I really don't see the point. However, it's dead easy- you assign buttons the same way you assign keystrokes, and in the controller options you get all the axis controls right there. Did you check out all the options menus? Oh yeah, don't forget to turn on controller support in the controller menu, too.

Playing FPS games with gamepads feel very awkward for me.

If you've got your Windows disc, the file you need should be on that disc, at least that's what I've discovered from a quick Google search.
