That's your choice of course but as opposed to places like filefront where you need to sit through endless pages and ads to get a download, you don't have to do that on DWS. You simply click the download link and there it is. One of the advantages of my site. Of course, some people are more concerned with how pretty something is rather than the true value of a website, which is what it can offer you.Grubber wrote:@Sematary: I'm not bashing you. I haven't visited your site in past and I probably won't in future, but that's all I can say about it. Also, can you please post a link where your page ranking is stated? I'm just curious.
The most disturbing review of Titan
It would matter to someone who may not have the skillz to deal with those creatures. Every aspect of a map is important, especially gameplay and the creatures that comprise it.jimmy91 wrote:I must admit, after reading the first half of Jive's review: all I can say is that he's hypercritical(sp?) of some quite minute things, like saying how it's "insane" or whatever, how the archvile in Map06 was "available" on all three skill levels. That doesn't seem like a very good judgement to me. I think that it doesn't matter what KINDS of monsters get put in a level on one skill level, just the AMOUNT of them matters more.

Sematary, a few words of advice:
First, while I understand that it feels good to create something that others use and appreciate, and it feels bad to have what you've spent your time creating subjected to criticism, leaping in to defend it whenever a negative word is said just makes you look... well... pathetic. I don't mean that as an insult, but take a step back. It's a website, not your grandmother, and Grubber is expressing his opinion of it, not trying to destroy it. Further, he's doing a better job of it than most other netizens, offering what he believes to be good advice on how you can make it better. I noticed that you all but swept that entire post aside, stating such things as "I don't care" and "So what?" That just shows that you can't take criticism enough to even ponder for a moment that what you've created could actually be made better. If randy were to reply in the same manner we'd have bugs plaguing ZDoom that would make it all but unplayable. Nobody's perfect, and that imperfection is going to extend to anything they create; you're no exception, I'm afraid. If you simply disagree with his opinion, all well and good; you also aren't under obligation to take the advice and fix it by any means, but in the meantime you vehemently defending your website is only making you look like a zealot and lending others arguments' credence.
Second, learn to brush off criticism if you're not willing or able to correct the problem. What does it matter what Grubber thinks of your site if (as you say) thousands of others are using it? No matter how great you make something, there are always going to be people tearing it apart and insulting it. Just learn to let it go and move on with your life.

They don't host those files locally. I do. It's a nice interface they have but it is still the archives and the archives are SLOW.leileilol wrote:WhatSematary wrote:That's your choice of course but as opposed to places like filefront where you need to sit through endless pages and ads to get a download, you don't have to do that on DWS. So again - what is it you have against Doom Wad Station? What did I, or my site, ever do to you?
What matters is that there are many people, including myself, who put alot of time and effort into that site so that there is a central location for everything concerning mapping and then some jerkoff comes out and trashes it, not knowing a billionth of the amount of work that goes into a project like that. I appreciate that it's not the prettiest site in the world but I really don't care about that - it's the content that matters, not the gloss. To simply out and call a site a piece of shit for no reason is [censored word].HotWax wrote:Sematary, a few words of advice:

Constructive criticism I can handle - what set me off was the guy that called the site a shithole or some crap like that. That's not what I consider constructive criticism.HotWax wrote:And the more times you refer to him as a "jerkoff" the less people will take you seriously. All I'm suggesting is to be the bigger person, take constructive criticism where it's warranted, and brush it off where it's not.

You know, it's the gloss what people see at first.Sematary wrote:it's the content that matters, not the gloss
IMO clean interface is superior to speed when downloading files as small as doom wads.Sematary wrote:They don't host those files locally. I do. It's a nice interface they have but it is still the archives and the archives are SLOW.
Also it seems that doomwadstation is done using only HTML. Maybe you should take your time and convert everything to use one of the many PHP content management systems - with that you'll be able to add new pages/modify the existing ones without the need to modify the actual files, upload them and so on - that saves a lot of time plus you don't have to touch the code at all.

The first comment is to tell you how sad I am to don't have received any advise of this thread. You could have sent me, at least, an email...
If you have problems with me, I gave my email address, no?!?
I said on my review that your wad (at least the map05) was lacking of common sence, and I still maintain what I wrote, and now you show us that you don't have any sence of common education. That's fine for me, and prove that I was right to think what I thought.
I didn't change ANYTHING at all !!!
unused textures?!?
What are you talking about?!? I din't change any texture!!!
So, if you are not sure of what you read...
You didn't use any special sky texture, apart the ones of the Doom 2 Iwad.
It's why I wrote:
And also:
To everyone writing that I am not good in english: when you will be able to write in french as correctly as I do it in english, it will be the beginning of some exchanges between us. It's easy to fall on my back and to tell me that I write like Babelfish. You are simply assholes if you think such a thing!!! At least, it's a lack of common education...
or I will spell your nick Ixnafitual.

And me, I think that you have perhaps used some drugs when you built your pwad...The only thing I am certain of, is the large amount of drugs present in the reviewer's system when he wrote his review.
What?!?he modified the level set.
I didn't change ANYTHING at all !!!
Of course, I used GlBspX on it. Do you know what for is this tool? The modified level has also gained 2MB
What?and has the review as well as some large, unused textures in it.
unused textures?!?

Do you have a correct vision or you didn't use your glasses when you have read this review? I wrote:He also seems to have run the WAD in an unintended port
Code: Select all

What?!?He has also replaced the sky textures used

Ixnatifual didn't bother to make new skies and he used simply the ones made for Doom2. But I thought that it was too bad that such a pwad don't have its own skies, when all is done to give you a very particular feeling.
Code: Select all
I didn't make highres pictures (thus I could have done it), for the purpose to stay as close as possible to what was intended by the author.
This to prove that I made a search about you...What's even stranger, he sometimes addresses me as "Kadon", which is a nickname I dropped years before joining the community
I am french, and I use with some difficulties your natural langage.Shinjanji wrote: It almost seems as though he either has a bad grasp of English, or uses a translator.

It's not that I'm mad or anything, just puzzled why you randomly changed the skies. What?!?

I know, but this is what I can't understand. You mention for instance two secrets that you can't reach and a door that doesn't open. This led me to believe you were using some other port, as this is not an issue when I play in ZDoom or GZDoom.I wrote: Requires: ZDOOM port (I used GZDOOM)
Fixed. I apologize for any inconvenienceSematAry!!!or I will spell your nick Ixnafitual.

What should I make of that?Ask me, and I'll answer you...

Thanks for clearing up the Kadon thing, that really had me confused.
To do what you're suggesting would be tantamount to the Big Dig in Boston. I've considered it but I know I don't personally have the time to redo the entire site like that and no one has stepped forward to offer their ability to do so. So, even though it is not "the best" site in appearance, the design that is currently implemented is mostly consistent and far better than what I had a couple of years ago. I agree with the ease of management that you are talking about. I love it for my wiki, my forums and the /idgames area for just that reason. The rest of the site, however, consists (literally) of hundreds upon hundreds of pages which would need to be redone for a php project of the type you're talking about and that just isn't feasible. I'd have to hire someone and donations aren't going to cover that. Thanks for the suggestion though.Grubber wrote:You know, it's the gloss what people see at first.Sematary wrote:it's the content that matters, not the gloss
