On the topic of n00bs

Post by BloodyBonz »

Why is it that we got overrun by n00bs just a couple of days ago? This is just scary.

Ok, the reason why there has been no updates is because DomRem hasn't been around...simple logic for simple minds.

Though I may not be the target of this post, I still feel a need to draw attention to it.

I find this post insulting, and quite frankly, am frustrated beyond words with "newb bashing". Instead of making inflamatory posts such as these, why not show new members the error of their ways so that they may become productive members of the forums?

Without the new members, the forum will die. This is a fact, since in the space of the last year these forums have seen the loss of several members. Without the influx of new members, with new ideas and points of view, stagnation occurs.

Whatever. I'm tired of this, and would rather not be a member of this.

Well, there is no reason to post a topic about if you would of just contacted me via PM. I admit that I have seemed a little flamey the past couple of days, and I appologize sincerely. I grouped you and the other guys that showed up recently with Lord_Shadow, and I'm sorry about that.

@Bonz: The word 'overreacting' comes to mind. Over two days I've seen a couple of newbs posting a lot of KoF and stx style posts, making me think we've got a couple of clones here. They seem to have looked at what goes on here, and just dove right in. Seems they know everything about everyone already, and are just consistently begging for updates to projects and results.

It's a good thing somebody as gentle as Marty picked up on them really. :P

Although I don't like n00b bashing either, it's possibly worth pointing out that there is usually a distinction made between newbs and n00bs on this board.

Newbies are welcomed as people who act like human beings but who are new to Zdoom. Their only "crime" is that they don't know as much about Zdoom as the people who have been here longer do. People are usually very happy to help such "newbies".

N00bs, on the other hand, are the kind of people who turn up, make stupid posts, make inflammatory remarks, make no effort to try and find out what the customs and conventions around here are or whether their particular needs have already been met by earlier posts. In short, they seem willfully rude or ignorant and rarely make valuable contributions to the board and are unlikely to do so unless they change dramatically.

A n00b can behave like a n00b for a very long time (forever, possibly, or until they get banned) but a newbie is unlikely to be a newbie for very long.

I don't possess any real information to tack on, as our beloved Scottish friend has unraveled the mystery so clearly. Unfortunately, that tiny little offending comment made by Marty is the least of your worries around here. Try not to take things quite as non-unserious, as issues tend to become quite hectic, involving such reasons as mindless zombie behavior, spontaneous combustion (flaming), and overly-cryptic posting styles. But nevertheless, if you can manage to look past the trivial matters that plague individuals today and take in the whole picture, the forums are quite a luxurious resort.

THANK YOU.

The more people realize that, the better. I'm not siding with anyone with the topic at hand, but I get tired of saying time and time again that a newbie does not have to automatically be a "n00b." Noobism can last forever. Good newbies will catch on quick. Seriously, if all of the senior members here joined a Doom forum for the first time at some point and they're well-behaved now, doesn't that tell you something? That perhaps newcomers don't have to be shitheads?

Just my four haypennies.

Y'see, I couldn't say that myself without feeling slightly hypocritical (Though all of my rather silly new person posts are gone now, or whatever they were), so I'm glad somebody else did :P

I admit I find myself to have been a bit n00bish back when I joined a forum for the first time, but considering nobody ever yelled at me, I doubt I was absolutely that bad. I don't go there anymore anyway, but.
