stx is learning how to make wads!

Post by stx »

I'm finally going to do it!

I just have a quick question for you guys. Which is the EASIEST TO USE Decorate Editor? Say if I wanted to make a weapon for the WRW, or one of those dangerously destructive overpowered weapons that destroy the whole universe. What Editor should I use?

I usually just type it directly in XWE.

Entry -> New, name it DECORATE.

Then type whatever (or copy and paste) then Script -> Save.

Copy and paste is your best friend, as a beginner. Learn from other peoples' stuff.

What is with you guys using Notepad? Clearly Metapad is the superior text editor! [/ad]

But yeah, a text editor and this index of commands and syntax are your best friends. Be sure to bookmark the page and copy/paste any commonly used commands.

That's what I'm afraid of. I don't want to do anything too complicated just yet...

Just use XWE's text editor, beats the hassle out of saving files externally, then having to import the files everytime you make a change.

You don't get the luxuries of syntax highlighting or whatever, but who needs that! DECORATE is simple enough that it doesn't need any colourful shit!

Glad to see I'm not the only person that edits decorate within XWE.

Also glad to see that stx is making something at last :D

Just please don't get too ambitious.

You dont have to save files externally. Get Wintex and edit it from there. When you are done with the editin, click the exit button and it will ask you if you want to really modify the entry, click ok. Then save your wad (FILE->Save), exit the wad, then go back into the wad. You will see that there will be two enties listed (i dont know why Wintex doesnt just replace lumps, but it's a good thing if you realized you messed something up. Delete the second entry (the one thatis under the entry with the same name) and then save again.

Speaking personally, I'd much, much rather have separate files that I edit and then insert. Call it a backup or insurance mentality if you like but I always prefer to have my resources and my compiled WADs as separate, independant entities - be it sounds, graphics, text lumps, whatever. I also like using dedicated tools to do the editing. GoldWave, PSP, textpad etc...
