[Project Idea] City maps, anyone?

Post by Dittohead »

Doom lacks intriguing and well designed city levels. For the most part, atleast.

And I've been kicking an idea around for a while now for a ZDoom specific wad that concentrates on city themes and ideas. I have included a reference guide for ideas that I have come up with for this wad. I have written a poor storyline that threads together the likes of Resident Evil and Doom. The basic idea of the wad is to recreate Doom 1 on Earth instead of the moons of Mars. I do not want the project idea to be too ambitious so I have left the maps at 8 total. However, if this is an idea more people want to get behind, we could do an entire episode - or even create a giant, living city. Who knows.

What is needed if this should happen? Well, I can import and create artwork for flats and textures - in addition to mapping of course. I can also lay down the presentation pretty well, too. What this project would need is another talented map author and somebody who knows ZDoom inside and out for scripting ideas and possibilities.

I do not know much about weapon modifications or adding enemies. However, I do have a .wad compiled full of city textures, flats, and sprites ready to go. For those of you who I have managed to pique your interest, read the design document and tell me what you think. If this is even managable, at all.

I have not included any screenshots or proof of work because I do not want to start on a project if I can't get adequate help from the community. I would rather use this wad that I have compiled for something more basic like a community resource wad if this project doesn't get off the ground. Afterall, it's just an idea at this point.

Suggetstions or ideas? But please just make sure you atleast read the above document before doing so, heh. :)

Cities in Doom, eh? Well, I know I put together a rather large and open city for WWE (don't quite know what Deathsong's done to make it better, cause I haven't seen it since I sent it to him). You can go in every building and everything, thanks to GZDoom's 3D floors. I also had an idea at one point to make sections of MegaCity from Matrix Online just for fun. I'm also going to have to make some small city areas for my own project that I'm working on, too, but those I've already got the basis for, along with the textures.

Anyways, if you happen to own City of Heroes, there are a LOT of good city textures in there (and if need be, I can send you a .pigg viewer to be able to extract them). It's also got excellent ambient sound effects and such, too. Don't know how many other games have rather easy to rip city textures...

Also, a suggestion: Try to go for the open ended city instead of just linear 8 maps. A hub is good for making different areas, maybe allowing the city to be even larger if different parts are sectioned off in different maps. Also, if you can, <blatent plug> I'd definitely suggest usign GZDoom, to be able to make the buildings more detailed, and also to be able to make buildings you can go in and have multiple floors and such.</blatent plug>

Anyways, due to the fact that my plate is kinda full with various different projects and maps and stuff going on all at the same time, at the moment I won't be able to offer any help, but perhaps when my load lightens up some, I can.

Either way, good luck with this.

Check out "City of the Damned" by Tormentor667. I can't help due to shortage of a proper editing station, but I'd be willing to provide advice if needed.

Good luck! :thumb:

I like the idea of a hub. However, I am more classically trained in Doom editing with limited Zdoom knowledge and experience. However, I am willing to learn how to do this and other ZDoom functions. As far as making it specifically for GZDoom, it's a possibility. The only small nag I have about that though is compatibility. I would like the mod to be playable on Zdoom since it would reach a larger base. But who knows?

True, about the GZDoom thing... Of course, there are ways of faking it in Zdoom, with silent teleports and such... Well, just putting forth suggestions and stuff.

I still need towns for the RPG engine
I'm planning on getting about 4-6 towns together for it, if you guys are trying to build those kind of towns too. 8-)

Betasword's city hasn't changed all that mutch since I got it. I'm not really sure what to do with all these buildings. But I have retextured the whole thing and redone all the 3D floors, as well as completely rebuilding the church. Okay, I lied about it not changing much.

I'm sorry, but what is this mythical city map for WWE? And more importantly, what is WWE?

WWE = World Wrestling Entertainment!!!!!!!!!!!

lol j/k

It's "Woe Without End". It'a project in the works,

I think i posted something like this here.

And Yes Ditto, I agree, Doom2's so-called "Maps" that were supposed to be a city that are a boxed cage with some kind of wall around them do not look in any way Realistic. They should take the "Walls" around it out and replace them with an image if a faraway cito, or maybe an invisible wall bordering from a bare floor around the map.. that would be good.. AT LEAST.

That's the second person to make that joke/mistake :)

But yeah, it's Deathsong's project of mythic proportions that I've thrown some stuff (and a hella lotta time) into, including said city, and now working on the sewer system, along side various other projects, one of which I should really make a post about sooner or later... Oy.

If modern/semi-futuristic city maps are somewhat lacking, fantasy/medieval city maps are positively non-existant :).

That'd be because Doom on it's own doesn't really lend itself towards those sorts of maps.

I imagine that Heretic or Hexen texture packs (I don't know myself) would come in handy for that (assuming the palette converts) or perhaps custom textures and flats?

I know of one old city map for Heretic (watrcity.wad) and I think one of the Hordes of Chaos maps too.
