jumping in Doom and other games..

Post by Gucek »

Ehm. I feel a bit stupid asking this one, but I’m not at home to check this atm. Which games had “jump” originally? Didn’t jumping start with Quake? Could you please change description (for those which didn’t have) to “forced jump” or something like that? I would like to play everything with original “puzzles”, you know... (I only use a fraction of ZDoom features – I only wanted Windows engine with hi-res that –contrary to Doom95- could handle Heretic, and Hexen – nothing more! Strife became great “added bonus” in the meantime! – I planned to come back to this game – thank you!!!)

Hexen and Strife had jump. Doom and Heretic did not.

It didn't start with Quake. Don't know which game was the first. Hexen and Strife have jumping, Duke and other Build games too (Duke was the only one before Quake).

Why else is there a railing line type for Strife?

The little known FPS Lethal Tender had both crouch AND jump first back in 1993 :P

damn that game was awesome, nobody can beat a hero name like Nick Hunter. I wonder where his brother Mike is.

There was also another modification to height related stuff in Strife. IIRC, the maximum step-up height was slightly lower, In Doom, the max step-up is 24 units (IIRC). I *think* Strife maybe had it set a little lower but it was more than compensated by the jump key. Anyone confirm that for me? (Can't check ATM.)

First person to mention Marathon dies. Nothing fancy, just a blunt object to the head.

Strife uses 16. But only for humanoids. The robots use 32 but ZDoom doesn't do that right. Another difference is that ZDoom assumes a dropoff height of 16. But it is 32 in Strife itself. It's not that important anyway but wouldn't it be cool to have these configurable per monster?

Agreed. I want to print that off, stick it on a wall and throw loads of various sharp objects at it. Like knives and darts. :D

Yes it would. I always felt that "drops off cliffs" (or whatever it was) was a very blunt tool, but being able to allow some mosters, in some circumstaces to drop down into places would be cool.

Yeah, like imps jumping down out of a vent or something (I have found a sort of way to do that but it involves scrolling floors that move things, I discovered the side effect whilst making a running river for my wad).

It's not that easy. All that could be specified is the height of steps a monster can go up and down. But for something like a tiny rat 24 may already be too much.

Well I thought you could run off a ledge on to them or over them. But only a moron would jump over a railing into their doom
