Project Brutality Particle Issue
Split from the UZDoom release thread because this actually seems to be more of an editing/scripting question relating to Project Brutality and GZDoom.
Hey, UZdoom is unfortunalty a huge disappointment as to what it can and cant play. One of my most basic games will just freeze for no reason when it used to just play fine on gzdoom. I just ran into a huge error and im not sure whos accountable for it. The whole problem is that I cant spawn pinata particles on one of my favorite games anymore and im not sure why this code was changed in gzdoom or with windows update but it seems like corporate corruption to me. Why would all of a sudden a game not work an any versions of gzdoom that i saved from the past. It will spawn the particles on UZdoom but the game glitches and freezes so why does this happen anyways when it didnt have any errors on gzdoom?

Hey im not sure why they say Uzdoom is so great. It wont play a simple game i had playing fine on gzdoom.
Re: Project Brutality Particle Issue
Have you actually reported these as bugs properly? Just saying "one of my most basic games will just freeze" really doesn't give much away. You haven't even said what game, what settings, what hardware...
If you want things to be fixed, you need to let the people who can fix it know about the problem.

What Enjay said. People can't help you if you aren't clear, specific and acting in good faith. I don't feel any of these are happening here.
Re: Project Brutality Particle Issue
Ok actually the game started working all of a sudden on gzdoom but i just had to reinstall my hard drive and I’ve run into the same issue again with gzdoom not spawning particle effect. It wouldn’t work for a few days and then it started working do you think it has something to do with Microsoft?Enjay wrote: ↑Sun Feb 22, 2026 11:05 am Have you actually reported these as bugs properly? In order for anyone to be able to help you we need to know:
- The exact version of UZDoom you are using
- The set of mods you are using (preferably with links to them)
- The UZDoom settings you have configured
- The operating system you are using and the hardware you are running it on
- Precisely what you are expecting to happen, and what is happening instead
- If this is a new issue, when did it last work? Specifically what version of UZDoom/GZDoom were you using at the time?
- If you have them, logs and screenshots are helpful (especially of error messages)
Re: Project Brutality Particle Issue
Hey I’ve got it working fine on uzdoom. I’m waiting for my computer to shift and start working again on gzdoom. The particle effect that I’m talking about is for the mod project brutality 3.0. There’s a piñata for ammo and health in the game and it spawns a very pretty particle effect. Just look up some footage on YouTube of people doing the glory kill and you’ll see the particle effect
Re: Project Brutality Particle Issue
ok im sending my report to github. Please help me figure this out if you can
Re: Project Brutality Particle Issue
Make sure r_maxparticles is set to a somewhat high-ish value (not too high of course).
A value such as 4000 might work okay on some systems.

Re: Project Brutality Particle Issue
Hey can someone please play my game on uzdoom! I’m playing my more concise version of my game and it’s working now without freezing. I posted a link to the pk3 on GitHub link you provided. The funny thing is it’s working now the piñata particles on uzdoom. If you would just test my pk3 on uzdoom on a pretty good computer tell me if you run into errors like uzdoom freezing It seems like it’s working for me now on uzdoom but still not on gzdoom. Another interesting fact is I tried to spawn the piñata on an old computer same glitch still comes up with gzdoom, it won’t spawn particle. It’s pretty easy you go into hardware settings and you can make the particle effect square smooth or round. But yeah I have an older computer still it works on gzdoom an also on my iPad with gzdoom. But anyways if you have a fast processor try my game please if you figure out if there’s a bug.
Re: Project Brutality Particle Issue
How many particle effects can you typically create I mean there’s a lot around spawn particles but is it possible to do something different than pb3.0 particle effects?
Re: Project Brutality Particle Issue
I thought 4000 was already the default?
The r_maxparticles parameter that Rachael mentioned controls that. So, it can be system specific if someone has changed the default (either up or down).
I find a quick way to get a feel for what the value actually looks like is to load a mod that uses a railgun, go to the console and type "freeze" and then fire the railgun several times. When new particles stop appearing, that's what the limit looks like.
Re: Project Brutality Particle Issue
Hey why don’t you ever answer my question accurately? I already told you it’s obvious buddy that they stopped the particle effect from working in gzdoom just try a game like project brutality 3.0 the particle effect won’t work anymore
Re: Project Brutality Particle Issue
The last question you asked was: "How many particle effects can you typically create I mean there’s a lot around spawn particles but is it possible to do something different than pb3.0 particle effects?"
You got the answer that it varies depending on what a user's r_maxparticles value is set to, but the default is 4000. I don't know how to be more accurate about that.
In the second part, yes, it is possible to do something different than pb3.0 particle effects. I can guarantee that, but until we know exactly which effects you are talking about (preferably with actual code examples) then it is very hard to be more specific.
FWiW, "they" have not stopped the particle effect in GZDoom (or UZDoom). Particles work just fine.
If there is a specific problem with a specific instance of particles in a specific mod, then that case needs to be looked at - either from the mod side or the engine side, but the engine still has particle effects.
You said to "just" try project Brutality, but it is a hugely complex mod with thousands of changes to the game. That's not a "just" task - you are asking people to give up their time to look at something very complicated. I've looked at Project Brutality because you asked about it, and I'm seeing lots of particle effects, but I don't know if it's the ones you are referring to. I don't really use any of the "Brutal" mods, so I don't know what bit of it I'm meant to be looking at. It is also entirely possible that the effect you are looking at isn't even using the engine particles system at all, but actors defined in Project Brutality itself - like I said, I don't know what effect you are talking about.
Telling people to "Just look up some footage on YouTube" of a particularly complex mod is actually not very helpful either, especially when you didn't even provide a link to a suitable video. Again, you are asking people to spend their time to look up something to help you - and you aren't even making it easy for them. Either way, people can't debug a video. It may help to see the effect, but getting a cut-down, stand-alone example of the problem is much, much better. FWiW, I did look up a couple of videos on YouTube but, again, I have no idea if what I saw is what you are asking about because you didn't describe it in such a way that would help me recognise it.
I know that you have raised an issue on GitHub but from the look of it, your question really seems to be more about getting things to work on GZDoom because you say that you have it working on UZDoom. As a result, I have moved your posts about Project Brutality and the particles to this new topic (along with any related answers that you have received). The UZDoom release thread is not a suitable place to continue a conversation about how to get a scripted effect from Project Brutality to work in GZDoom.
The really important take-away here is - please remember the advice that you have been given here and in detail in your GitHub issue thread by jekyllgrim (and which you did not follow in your answer to him).
You have asked people to be accurate, but you are not providing enough information for people to do that. You must be accurate: you must provide as much detailed and accurate information as possible, preferably using actual code examples or PK3s that people can test. It is very hard for anyone to dig into a huge, complicated mod and find a problem with one tiny element of it without you helping to guide them to it.
People do want to help you, but you need to help them to do so. At the moment, you're not really doing that.
So, in answer to your question "Hey why don’t you ever answer my question accurately?": people have been answering your questions as accurately as possible, given the level of information that you have provided for them to work with. So, again, please help people to help you.
