Contrary to popular belief, we are not all-knowing-all-seeing magical beings!

If you want help you're going to have to provide lots of info. Like what is your hardware, what is your operating system, what version of GZDoom/LZDoom/whatever you're using, what mods you're loading, how you're loading it, what you've already tried for fixing the problem, and anything else that is even remotely relevant to the problem.

We can't magically figure out what it is if you're going to be vague, and if we feel like you're just wasting our time with guessing games we will act like that's what you're really doing and won't help you.

Custom sounds load but are silent

Post by sunroses »

We are running GZDoom on Linux Mint, and the custom sounds defined in SNDINFO seem to be "loaded", being listed by `soundlist` and everything, but when played the sounds are completely silent. Built-in sounds work fine.

This is our SNDINFO lump:
```
// Teleports
transport/warp = TELEPT
transport/fail = TLFAIL
// Crows (imported from an entity wad)
CRWFLP = CRWFLP
CRWCAW1 = CRWCAW1
$Limit CRWCAW1 0
CRWCAW2 = CRWCAW2
$Limit CRWCAW2 0
CRWCAW3 = CRWCAW3
$Limit CRWCAW3 0
```

We're using pulseaudio on Linux Mint, system info is as follows:

Our sound files are various OGG and FLAC files with no extensions in the sounds/ folder of our pk3 (currently a folder itself for easy editing).

Any clue where to start debugging? Did we miss something obvious?'

(Things we've already tried: using full paths in the sndinfo with extensions on the files, other shuffling around of the format, playing sounds from console (still silent))

Upon further inspection, this problem doesn't occur with sounds in the DOOM audio format. As such we suspect gzdoom is failing to play other formats of sound on our system.
This fixes our own custom sounds, but strangely not the ones for the crows. No clue why.

Attached: a zip with two sounds, one of which works (TLFAIL) and one which doesn't (CRWFLP).
Both can be played with playsound but the latter is silent. Does anyone know what the distinction could be here?

These files did not work when in any format other than doom sound format, but it only fixed one of them??

They both work for me. I just loaded up your files with the following simple SNDINFO and they both made a sound when I played them from the console:

Code: Select all

test1 CRWFLP
test2 TLFAIL

yeah it's probably an issue with our computer specifically, but we don't know what the difference could be??

Yes, I followed the same procedure and it happened the same way.
