Quicksave poll (classic/rotating?)

Post by Graf Zahl »

For me the classic 1993-style quicksave feature has always been some ugly baggage I wished I could remove, but never went that far.
Now that we also have the optional quicksave rotation which I feel is what 'quicksave' really should mean I'd like to ask our users if they use the feature, and if so, which variant.

We weren't aware of the rotating quicksave option until seeing this, so we checked it out, and it's great. It got our vote cause that's what we'll use going forward. (Had been using classic quicksave prior to this.)

I was not aware of the rotating quicksaves either.
I assume that the "classic quicksave" is the option that only has 1 slot that it continuously saves to?
Despite me being a quicksave fanatic, I still prefer having only one slot, so I guess I am in the minority here.

Classic Quicksave. Why? Because I don't want a zillion save files. Also, I don't have to worry about loading the wrong one.

Quicksave means "save to the slot I last saved to", not "rotate between a zillion slots".

Classic Quicksave also disambiguates Quickload. With Rotating Quicksave you're never exactly sure what save it's going to load.

Rotating quicksaves are a definite improvement IMO.

In most games that I play, quickload loads the last quicksave made. You have to use a more involved method (e.g. opening the load menu) if you want to load an older quick save.

I like rotating saves. I load the AutoAutoSave mod which adds a key to drop a new auto save at will, and that combined with raising the auto save count to 10 or more is usually an acceptable amount of safety net for me.

I prefer the original quicksave system by far. Rotation makes sense if I'm playing a game that doesn't have mods, a game where I stay with one modlist, or if the game separates saves by mod/mapset, but none of those apply here. The risk of my saves for one thing being potentially overwritten by another because of the way the system works makes it simply not worth it for me.

Agreed, and I don't like clutter.

Fun fact: I don't use "advanced" features on the desktop like workspaces, unless I'm in a tiling window manager. Classic Quicksave fits in with that ideology. TL;DR: KISS.

Set your number of rotating quicksaves to 2 and you avoid all clutter but also got a little bit of a safety margin because your last quicksave will serve as a backup.
Even better. :P

Years ago, I unbound quicksave and instead made myself a fake quicksave alias that was just "spcial autosave" and bound that to the formerly quicksave key. In effect creating myself a rotating quicksave system long before actual rotating quicksaves got implemented in the engine.

I don't see any issue with this. Newer games already did that.

If you have important stuff you don't want overwritten, don't use quicksaves for it!

Doom engine quicksaving was never really "quick" in the mandatory picking-of-a-slot and the likewise for the load (and the confirmation). Quake just had a save quick / load quick default keybinds, which are saves that don't involve the save menu. Supposedly the Nerve'd Doom does the same. The less of that save menu time, the better IMO.

Rotating. Because there might always come a time when you save with a rocket mere inches from the back of your head and don't realize until you're in an unending loop of death.
