Is it ok to post edited versions of another mod?

Post by elSebas54 »

I was making some changes on a mod and i want to share it, what are the specific rules for posting a modified version of someone else's mod? aside of crediting and linking the original mod of course.

First of all: check the included text file's Permissions section, if it exists. If it looks like this:
* Copyright / Permissions *

Authors MAY use the contents of this file as a base for
modification or reuse.
Then, yes, reuse and modifications are allowed. It is generally considered good practice to credit and link the original, in as many obvious places as you can.

If the section doesn't exist, or permissions are unclear, it's advisable to find a way to contact the author first for permission. If that is not possible for whatever reason, just use your best judgment.

The big key point here is that honesty is the best policy. You don't want to fool people into thinking that the modified mod is entirely your own work, because not everybody's going to have the history of playing Doom mods to know about it. And if you're told "no," for any reason, then it's time to pursue alternatives for your project (such as patch files).
