Help with importing/exporting MD3 files in Blender

Post by not_johncena »

Hey there! I've been looking for a way to import/export MD3 files in Blender. I've tried out Nash's MD3 plugin, but it seems like it can only export MD3's. It would also be nice to be able to use a later version of Blender, though that's not necessary. Thank you!

When I want to import a model, the only way I know is to use noesis to convert it to obj a import the obj into blender.

Hmm, I'll try that out. Thank you!

But keep in mind this process removes animation.

For exporting, I export my models as .fbx files and then convert them to .md3 using Noesis.
I haven't tried using it for importing, but you could try to convert .md3 models into .fbx ones using that program and opening them in Blender that way.

The animation is not removed in fbx conversion?
edit: How do I convert the model to fbx with the animation in? Itried converting a model with animation to fbx and the animation is gone...

Yeah I just checked, the animations aren't imported with the .fbx file.
They do convert properly from .md3 to .fbx as Noesis shows, but importing the model to blender doesn't import the animations as well.
Don't have any other idea how to do this, sorry.

New update! I've got a system where, if i need to, I can use Noesis to convert the md3 files into fbx files and import them into blender, then I can export the file as an fbx and use Neoisis again to convert it into an md3 (this method is nice because i can use later versions of blender). So as a test, I decided to try and swap the player with the quake player model. So I found a quake player model that was already rigged and ready for animating. So I made my animation, exported it as an fbx, converted it to an md3, and when i viewed the md3 file in Noesis it was completely messed up. Here's a image of the fbx and the md3 (the first model shown is the fbx, and the second is the md3)

Any ideas on whats causing this?

May I know why dont you export directly to md3? As has been said here. you cannot import a md3 model, but you can export it with preserved animation. So export it directly to md3 and it will work. Nash's exported is capable of exporting an animation.

Mainly because the method I use currently lets me use any version of Blender I want, and Nash's plugin only supports older versions of Blender. But I should really just suck it up and use the older version.
