I'm Regolith, but my real name is Evan. I go by Evan Lee on most social media, in case you recognize me from any of the Facebook Doom groups. I was active for a long time about 8 or so years ago.
I'm currently in the early stages of development for a game called SLUDGE. I am currently using GZDoom for the engine I want the game to be built upon.
Premise:
You are just a regular guy who got involved with the wrong people. A Mafia-type gang.
A situation gone wrong leads to your demise at the hands of one of their bosses.
You're shot in the chest with a shotgun and then thrown down into a manhole, where your body lies, bleeding out, until your death.
Elsewhere, a military chemical weapons research facility has an accident, and a dangerous glowing green liquid, nicknamed "The Sludge" makes its way into the city's water supply. This liquid is self-replicating and causes severe mutations in almost anything organic that it comes into contact with.
After a week or so sitting at the end of a sewage drain, some of The Sludge makes its way to you.
Suddenly, you gasp for air. The Sludge is now infused into your body, reviving you, keeping you alive. But you're not whoever you were in your previous life.
You have no memories of the person you were before. Your only memories remaining are of the people who killed you and tossed your body down the manhole, leaving you to succumb to your injuries.
You now make it your goal to get revenge on the people who killed you. You stand up and shamble your way down the sewer pipe your body floated down into, but are met with a giant mutant rat. You spot a large pipe wrench, and you use it to kill the rat. Suddenly, several more rats emerge from various sewage pipes and you swing the wrench like crazy, killing them all.
And so begins your journey to escape the sewers and come face to face with the madness that has overcome the outside world.
Gameplay plans:
- Large variety of unique weapons
- Variety of enemies to encounter
- Lots of enemies per level
- Unique boss fights
- Enemy Weaknesses and Resistances
- Focus on skilled play and satisfying movement
- Low-poly models
- Pixelated Textures
- Choppy model animation (think kinda like original Quake 1 animation without interlacing)
- Specular Maps, Normal Maps, and Brightmaps for most textures and models
- No sprites (ideally, not sure if I'll wanna add sprites for some things or not)
- Dynamic lighting and shadows for added atmosphere
I'm a bit ashamed to admit that I haven't had any progress with animating models, coding, or any of the other harder things that come with game development. I'm not really much of a coder, and I just learned how to do rigging for animation. If anyone is interested in helping with this project, please feel free to let me know how you would like to be involved. This is more than I've ever done with video game content creation, so I think this project is pretty ambitious for just me alone. Below I have shared some model render photos that I've made for SLUDGE. Feel free to leave feedback and suggestions.
I also have a discord! It's pretty empty as of posting this, but feel free to join if you want more frequent updates on what I'm currently working on.
