Heretic Soundtrack - Recreated and Recomposed - upd 06/03/22

Post by Aethun »

It is a real pleasure to present to you the Heretic soundtrack recreated and recomposed.
A little lonely.
Better sound quality with small additions that do not evade you from that experience of 20 years ago that brings us so much nostalgia.
At the moment I present you 10 tracks from the first episode, I have made some more tracks from the second episode, but I want to finish some more that I need to share it. I hope you enjoy it as much or more, like me being able to recreate this wonderful soundtrack.
Thanks to its author, Kevin Schilder.

Castellano:

Update youtube videos.

Update 05/10/2022
A little error in e1m9 pk3 and rebalance sound in e1m2.
Updated both files.

I have been very busy with the sound section of the game, in addition to having made modifications to all the tracks that I presented to you a couple of weeks ago. The Dungeons has been the theme that has given me the most work, I had an idea a bit far from the original concept, right now it is totally ready for your personal delight (and mine) XD much more in line with the original sound.

It sounds like this could have been the soundtrack for a 3DO release of Heretic! Well done. :thumb:

With that kind of talent, you might as well try to complete the 3DO Doom soundtrack and even do the same with the Doom II soundtrack as well!

Always happy to see more stuff for Heretic. I'm not very well versed in music but I do listen regularly to the Roland version of the original OST, so I think I can give some mildly thought feedback. Overall is really nice to listen to, very professional, and mostly true to the source spirit, although I guess it may be more accurate to describe your work as a half-medieval half-modern hybrid takeaway, at least in half of the tracks.
Spoiler: My thoughts on each track
In general, I do like how these ones sound. I remember listening some remixes years ago that went too far from the original or added too little to make a substantial difference. I think your take sits right in the perfect spot. I probably should've said this earlier but my opinions are purely based on how I think these would sound in-game. My bias against the electric guitar is more in the lines of "it breaks my immersion", purely in the context of this game, as dumb as it may sound lol

In any case, it's a really good job and I'd like to listen to what else you have in the works. Maybe even hope for one or two original extra tracks with any of the maps of the 3rd episode in mind that do not have dedicated music, just to see what you can come up with. "The Gatehouse" and "The Guard Tower" must be my favourites within these remasters. Keep at it!

I like these - faithful to the originals but moving them up a notch with something to make each one new and fresh. Nice job.

Thank you very much for your feedback.
I appreciate all the opinions and tastes cordially expressed, whether for or against, I understand that certain compositions can impact due to habit, that's why my idea was to maintain that spirit, in addition to giving it better quality, adding those little touches that lengthen a little more the tracks and do not go too far from the original pattern. Sometimes more, sometimes less, as inspiration requires.
On the Doom soundtrack, there are so many quality compositions that I doubt I could do anything more brilliant than Andrew Hulsut or ElGuitarTom. Also, my sticking points are Heretic and Hexen. Heretic is Doom's medieval inspiration, that's why I wanted to give the songs a more "slayer" touch. I've tried them playing at normal levels and they make me few enemies for the momentum of some tracks XD in fact, the battle against the Iron Litches reaches another dimension.

I never thought that someone would analyze me song by song XD
thanks for the work
I know that The Temple of Horus is based on The Docks XD but it is slightly different from the original with additions that I have included. And it sounds more like this theme than the original ;)
The Cathedral is a theme that originally does not correspond too much to the feeling that a cathedral should give, so including an organ instead of sounds similar to the original did not seem very appropriate to me because it lost its meaning. It is a song that has no modifications, only better percussion. Even so, is a charged level and gives juice to the action.
The Crypts. I must admit that there is something that still does not completely convince me on this subject, but it also has one of the modifications that I have made that I like the most...
Hell's Maw XD I need 10 more Litches to kill. Maybe it could be more epic, but I was looking for something more like a frantic confrontation XD I love it.
The Graveyard. I love this song. It's what I need to not let D'Sparil breathe XD

Actually this work started as an addition to a campaign I'm doing for Heretic, I was just going to use some songs, but a map got out of hand XD and I started thinking about recreating the complete soundtrack. So for now here we have the first part.
Thanks again for your comments.
Soon I will continue completing the post.

Thanks and a great hug!

Well, if you manage to eventually make your own maps, it can definitely feel more appropiate to the action in them. Looking forward to what you want to make! TQM, maestruli (?

Seems good, especially like your Dungeons Mix, look forwards to your OGG's, and I'll mix them up with some of Xeotroid's covers and Jimmy's Raven MIDI pack when they're available. :)

It's actually designed for the original game, there are songs that have a guitar in the midi, it sounds really bad, but they are guitars after all. The game, removing at the beginning, is a very cool game.
It's going to be a long time until I launch the campaign
Thanks, you are all love :thumb:

Greetings, mortal!
After more than a year with this work, it can be said that it is possible that this may be the definitive version of the soundtrack of the first chapter.
Being e1m1 and e1m2 my favorite themes, they are the ones that have cost me the most effort to capture since what I composed was the interpretation that I gave them, not the original theme. In addition, The Dungeons has very confusing chords in the Xeotroid version, which is the clearest and most current, and it could be said that all versions of this theme are slightly different.
I think I already feel very satisfied with the result that I share here.
I have also updated the Youtube videos.
Thanks for listening!

Listened them all once again and they certainly sound different, with some tweaks more notorious than others. There is a clear improvement overall, good job!

The Dungeons and The Gatehouse are excellent. Hope to see an episode 1 replacement with these remixes someday. :)
