Thoughts on the other Doom Engine Games?

I'm not really asking if the other games are good or bad, but more like what do they bring to the table? Are they on par with vanilla Doom, what do they do that Doom doesn't, do they have decent modding communities? Are the other games generally as enjoyable as vanilla Doom?

The ones I'm aware of (according to Wikipedia) are Heretic, Hexen, Strife, Chef Quest, and Hacx.

Strife always amazed me because it was able to do something resembling open world RPG, and the fact it's been reverse engineered by various people and teams to be mostly accurate. I don't feel it gets as much love as it deserves. I played it an enjoyed it with Strife: Veteran Edition even if I did get one of the bad endings.

By and large, these games' modding communities are the Doom modding community. Chex Quest does have its own little corner of the Internet, though; but for Heretic, Hexen, and Strife, it's just ZDoom.org and Doomworld.

They're all good games IMO. I especially like Heretic.

Also there are a ton of other games made with the Doom engine.
