Had a couple questions about movement speed.
One is, how fast do you have to be moving to be less likely for enemies to hit you? Is circle strafing at walk speed comparably good to doing that at run speed for example, or strafe run speed?
Also, if you go even faster than the game allows (turbo modifier etc), does this make hitscan enemies even less likely to hit you?
My other main question is about editing the player's movement speed, in GZDoom 4.7.1. I'm playing on a controller lately, so tracking monsters while circle strafe running is a bit tough. I'm considering ways to give myself a movement speed somewhere in the middle between the walking and running speed you'd have with keyboard & mouse, but on controller. A happy medium where I can still aim at things easily with the stick, but not feel too slow moving.
I notice left stick X and Y axis sensitivity settings affect your movement speed. So upping those to say 1.300 and turning cl_run to false makes me move at a comfortable speed, faster than walking, slower than running. But I'm just eyeballing it. I'm guessing walking at 2.0 on those axis settings would be the same or similar to running speed at 1.0?
And I haven't messed with turbo as much, default is 100. Trying it at 130 for example, is that the same movement speed as setting the sticks to 1.300, etc? Curious about how my customizing the movement speed would change gameplay like my likelihood to get shot, and what settings would correspond to say the midpoint between running and walking speed. Thanks.

Re: Movement speed questions
I can tell you that hitscans have zero travel time. The only thing preventing them from hitting you is their extremely wide angle of spread (22.5 degrees if I recall). You could be moving ultra fast in an open space and you will still have that chance of getting hit by a stray bullet.
There are, of course, edge cases to this. If you run fast enough to break cover, remain in view long enough for a zombie to enter their Missile state, and break line of sight to them within the 8 tics or so before they fire, they will fire anyway, even though the bullets will naturally never hit you.

Re: Movement speed questions
Interesting stuff, thanks. It seems in Doom (and also Duke 3D) it just feels safer if you're circle strafing, and even shimmying back and forth with strafing makes it feel like enemies miss you with hitscan weapons more often than if you're standing still or moving slower. But it is interesting to hear the science.

I am quite noob on evading or taking cover of hitscan enemies, but in my opinion circle strafing its not a really effective way in some cases
