Deon's Large Modpacks (RPG/LegenDoom/Roguelike Arsenal) 1.3

Post by Deon »

Installation and description video:

Dear forum goers.

I've spent hours trying to find different versions of mods and tweaking minor things to make them work together. My goal was to have an experience where I could play DOOM for a long period of time instead of finishing one WAD, and have a feeling of progression.

My goal is not to credit myself with any of this awesome content. My goal is to make it as simple as possible for users to enjoy these mods together. If you have any problems, come to this thread and I will use my limited modding experience to support you.

Disclaimer:
- I do not own any of the mods and I do not own any rights to the contents of this modpack.
- If you are an author of the mod and don't want to see your mod in one of my modpacks, tell me and I will remove it.
- The edits I've done are minor, just to make mods work together (besides DoomRPG Arena expansion, because I find it fun).

Installation instructions
1) Get your GZDoom (4.4.2 is recommended) and load doom2.wad from proper sources. Download link: https://zdoom.org/downloads
2) Download ZDL mod manager: https://github.com/lcferrum/qzdl/releases/ - Click on the ZIP file i.e. https://github.com/lcferrum/qzdl/releas ... in_x86.zip this one for Windows, and unpack it.
3) Download one of the modpacks here (bottom of the post) and unpack it.
4) Download the gzdoom-portable.ini file for proper settings/UI configuration and put it in the GZDOOM folder next to executable: https://www.mediafire.com/file/4arbrqqj ... e.ini/file
4) In ZDL, click "ZDL" dropdown button and then select "Load ZDL" option. Load the appropriate ".zdl" file from the main folder.
5) In ZDL, click "ZDL" dropdown button and then select "Load INI" option. Load the appropriate ".ini" file from the main folder.
6) The mods likely didn't load because of relative paths, manually re-add them as shown in the video above in the correct order.
7) Now you can start the game and play.

Incuded mods
- DoomRPG from the rebalance fork (locked thread) by Sumwunn: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=63766 (with my modification of Arena map).
- Modules from DoomRPG for compatibility, same link.
- Colourful hell by Hehe Cactus: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=47980
- Champions by Mikk: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=60456
- LegenDoom 2.7 by Yholl: viewtopic.php?f=43&t=51035&p=1170195
- The Sentinel's Lexicon ver 137 by Mifu: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=62724
- Brutal kick by The Zombie Killer: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=37949#p723055 (with my modification to add menu hotkey).
- (Optional/2nd pack) DoomRL Arsenal and DoomRL Monsters : viewtopic.php?f=43&t=37044
- UI mods - Precise crosshair, Target spy by m8f.

All HUD offsets for DoomRPG are adjusted not to block the screen too much. You can redesign it if you want.
Current HUD setup preview + new DoomRPG arena:

If ZDL doesn't work, here's the load order:

DOOMRPG+DOOMRLA/monsters:

If this fails to work for you, show your load order screenshot in the thread and ask me.

Download:
gzdoom-portable.ini file for proper settings/UI configuration: https://www.mediafire.com/file/4arbrqqj ... e.ini/file

Use only one of these, for the desired experience. Each mod size is ~1.2 Gb.

For others interested, I've also finally managed to make DoomRPG, DoomRL Arsenal and DoomRL Monster pack to work together 100%. If you need help with that, let me know.

1.1 will be reuploaded soon.

For those who already downloaded, there are only two files changed:

1) Settings: turned off HUD preview. Just go to Options -> DoomRPG options -> HUD, and disable HUD preview on top. It will stop showing irrelevant information, I turned it on for a screenshot. You can also use this view to adjust UI element positions without having specific effects running.
gzdoom-rpglegend.ini
(41.39 KiB) Downloaded 82 times
2) outpost.wad from RPGLegend/DoomRPG/maps. Updated to keep some safe spots from lava, added some lights to make dark world arena event manageable.

The full modpack reupload will happen soon, it takes some time.

I have made further adjustments to the Arena file, and turned it into Base defence in "Stronghold" style:

If someone is interested in fighting arena like this, here's the WAD file you need to replace in RPGLegend/DoomRPG/Maps folder:

I've updated the skybox and outside textures of the arena to fit more the DOOM style and be less of an eyesore. The initial Blue Outdoors is nice, but it wouldnt work for an Arena map because of the changing lighting (it is no longer blue after arena start and it would look ugly).

I've also made the terrain more natural-looking, like a planet surface.

Here's the example

The version 1.2 is being uploaded as I type this. I will keep working on the map and adding QoL and nice details. If you have any suggestions, I would be glad to hear.

I didn't realize that I had a ZDoom forum account in the first place when making a comment on your video, guess I'll just leave suggestions here.
I'd love to see skins, personally, as it's seemingly pretty multiplayer-focused. Modifying the kick to be like Guncaster with a forward thrust, or making it trigger some sort of glory kill, likely from another mod, would also be pretty nice.
I also think since random unique pistols are enabled by default, maybe you should balance them around the base pistol, so the pistol doesn't become too useful. It's my favorite weapon archetype when done well, and I reset just to get the six shooter when I was playing for the first time and didn't see the settings, but I had around just below 200 ammo on it at all times and even when I'm having fun I can tell "It shouldn't be balanced like this"

Speaking of pistols being enabled by default, it's a personal preference. You can go to a basic pistol or no pistol with one setting.

At the moment I am more focused on mapping side of things, trying to make a personal WAD. I just wanted this all to finally work together. However I will take into account the suggestions and if more people are interested, I will check it.

Right now the major show stopper is that I dont know how to compile a LIB from a bunch of C files yet, but I will get there.

Wonder if this can work with Doom RLA, and maybe not be plagued with FPS issues.

I have updated the first post with the instructions how to run it with DoomRL Arsenal + DoomRL Monster pack instead of ColorfulHell/Champions/LegenDoom. These are totally incompatible between each other, so you have to sacrifice them, but you get awesome guns from DoomRL Arsenal, and monsters in DoomRL monster pack are also very nice.

Unless the mods themselves were rewritten to try to pare down the amount of thinkers, it might not make much of a difference on your end, but there's no reason not to at least try it.

First off, Awesome job putting this together. I've been trying to get DoomRPG running for 2-3 months with no success, but your setup fired up the first time.

I could kiss you for getting BrutalKick.pk3 to work. I've been playing DRLA and really, really wishing for it. Yholl absolutely refuses to consider it for reasons I'm not good enough at coding to understand.

I also wanted to say that using your mod I've been running DRLA/Monster pack, Champions and Legendoom lite all together and ran into no issues so far, which seems to run contrary to expectations.

Anyway, Great work, keep it up, love what you've done so far, and look forward to seeing more!

Hey there ... Is there any mod which makes doom 2 to a "REAL" roguelite experience ?
I mean the doom rla is a good base but the actual permadeath and overall roguelike features are missing ..

Nope, unless someone wants to do that.

What I do is I simply restart when I die, like a self-imposed challenge, but I would love to have a mod like that myself. Maybe in the future if I manage to learn proper C instead of C#... But I cannot promise it at this stage of me getting involved with DOOM community, too early :).

I wouldn't want to play it like a roguelite, but I will say there is a soft permadeath mod out there, and I think a launcher that creates maps with oblige each time you launch it, so maybe those two will help get the feel?
