Has Raze gotten to the point where it can replace eduke?

Post by Guest »

I'm planning on playing Duke Nukem 3D and Blood for the the first time soon, and after being so familiar with GZDoom I'd like to stick with something I know. I was wondering if its recommended to play Duke and Blood for the first time on raze or if I should just use eduke an gloodgdx :geek:

Both games are fully playable and stable enough from my point of view, so if you're a newcomer it is a good place to start with Raze, yes :D .

But it's also important to note that the purpose of Raze is to push Build and the supported games forward, not to render the others ports irrelevant, similar to how GZDoom is not replacing the other ports either. Each port has its purposes, designs, and goals.

Raze is still in early development, but I have played through the entirety of original Duke, Blood and Redneck Rampage content with it. So yes, it should be good enough for that.
However, if you plan to play mods made for EDuke32 there may be problems.

For original Duke I strongly recommend to start the game with the -duke_compatibility_15 command line option the first time - the setting gets remembered. This selects the RedNukem code instead of EDuke32 which I found to show less issues with mods made for the original game.

Good enough for standard gameplay, playability depends when using mods. I wager less complex mods are quicker to work than the few huge mods (like Alien Armageddon) or AMC TC that are practically games in and out of themselves.

Still, regular players who just want to play Duke, Blood, RR, Raze is perfect applicable.

Which is impressive considering its early state of things.

For official levels, I think Raze can handle them well(just noticed what Graf said about Duke if you want classic feel).

If you ever want to try any of EDuke32(or other port-specific) mod, just use EDuke32(or needed port), as they were designed for EDuke32(some mod were designed for old EDuke32 snapshots and may won't working right on latest snapshots), Raze won't replaced EDuke32, at least not on current versions(lack of EDuke32 mod features/hacks, but even if Raze supports these features in future, I think you may still needed EDuke32/other port if the mod was still designed for EDuke32 or something).

Or, use every ports that your system can run, if you have selection problem. :P

Mods utilising EDuke32's extended CON scripts aside, I think that EDuke32/RedNukem and Raze will serve different niches.

Raze as the port of choice for players desiring "pretty rendering", while EDuke32 and the related ports will be the choice of players wanting something closer to the original.

Then there's the GDX ports, which offer their own perks and conveniences.
