A more Punchy Vanilla experiance

Post by TheOldKingCole »

I have played Doom 1 and 2 for 8 years now, and I am looking for something to spruce up my next playthrough. I'm looking for something that doesn't stray too far from vanilla but has a little more punch to it. Something that feels and looks more powerful but isn't actually any different, or at least is similar to vanilla doom. Any suggestions? Oh and no mods with reloading if possible, and no complex Doom, I feel it strays too far from what I am looking for

Best to code it yourself, for a thing like this you'll get about 25 opinions for every 5 people.

There are quite a few options but some are closer to Vanilla than others:

Smooth Doom: Literally just Vanilla with a coat of paint on it to make sprites have smoother animations (weapons, monsters, etc). Includes some tweaks to monster sprites for variety and different gloves. Also has bullet casings.

Beautiful Doom: Another visual overhaul with options to use enhanced weapon changes (including reloading). Includes gibs, breakable opjects, etc. Still has a Vanilla feel but just a bit more flare to it.

Enhanced Vanilla Project (EVP): Changes all the sprites and adds a ton of visual tweaks across the board but with Vanilla gameplay - it is going to feel like a Vanilla BD. It has a ton of mod options to select from and quite a few built-in mods like Tilt++ to give it a more cinematic feel. It won't look like Vanilla but it will play like Vanilla.

The next few mods are less just visual overhauls and do change the weapons in some fashion but still feel quite Vanilla:

Led's Generic Weapon Mod: Just a weapon mod that changes up the weapons. It does include options to disable reloading and it has many other tweaks to the look and feel of every weapon available.

Faspons (Own mod): Changes the monsters and weapons but with the ability to enable Vanilla monsters and disable reloading. Most weapons act like their original counter parts as there are no alternate fires. Also adds in some gibs, custom huds, and an iron man mode for a single-run gameplay mode if you'd like.

My favorite "vanilla but better" mod is Doom With Sprinkles. Really really great art/effects that match the original game's art style super well.
